Picturehouse Entertainment Announce the September Release of Björn Runge’s Adaptation of Meg Wolitzer’s THE WIFE

03 July 2018

After great reviews from the World Premiere at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival, PICTUREHOUSE ENTERTAINMENT are delighted to announce the UK release of the highly anticipated THE WIFE in cinemas nationwide 28 September. Set to become one of the most discussed films of 2018, THE WIFE will open this year’s Film4 Summer Screen at Somerset House for its UK Premiere on 9 August, with Glenn Close and director Björn Runge in attendance.

With a dazzling, career-defining performance from six-time Academy-Award nominee Glenn Close (Damages, Dangerous Liaisons, Fatal Attraction), the film also stars Jonathan Pryce (Pirates Of The Caribbean Trilogy), is directed by Björn Runge (Happy End) and is based on the best-selling book by Meg Wolitzer (The Interestings) who has just released her 12th novel The Female Persuasion to much acclaim.

Joan Castleman (Glenn Close) has spent forty years sacrificing her talent, dreams and ambitions to support her charismatic husband Joe (Jonathan Pryce) and his lauded literary career. Ignoring his infidelities and excuses for the sake of his art, she has tolerated his behaviour with acceptance and humour. After a lifetime of uneven compromises, Joan and Joe’s marriage has reached the moment of truth. On the eve of Joe’s Nobel Prize for Literature, Joan confronts the biggest sacrifice of her life and the secret of his career.

Directed by Björn Runge (Happy End, Sweden, 1961) and based on the best-selling book by Meg Wolitzer, THE WIFE is a poignant, funny and emotional journey; a celebration of womanhood, and self-discovery in later life. With a stunning cast including Max Irons (The Riot Club, Woman In Gold, Condor), Annie Starke (We Don’t Belong Here), Harry Lloyd (The Theory Of Everything, The Riot Club), Elizabeth McGovern (The Commuter, Downton Abbey) and Golden Globe winner Christian Slater (Mr Robot, True Romance and Heathers which is about to celebrate its 30th anniversary revival).

Hailed as a meritorious performance for Glenn Close, THE WIFE is the latest film from the prolific actress who recently completed filming on Julian Fellowes’s adaptation of Agatha Christie’s Crooked House. Close received her sixth Academy-Award nomination in 2012, along with Golden Globe and SAG nominations for Albert Nobbs. She was previously nominated for Fatal Attraction, Dangerous Liaisons, The Natural, The Big Chill, and The World According To Garp.

Jonathan Pryce is an award-winning actor on stage and screen. His eclectic film work includes Terry Gilliam’s Brazil, James Foley’s Glengarry Glen Ross, Carrington (for which Pryce won the Best Actor award at Cannes Film Festival and Evening Standard Awards), Evita and successful blockbusters Tomorrow Never Dies, the Pirates Of The Caribbean series. Pryce will next be seen on stage across the UK in Florian Zeller’s The Height Of The Storm.

Björn Runge is an acclaimed Scandinavian director, author, screenwriter and playwright. He has won the Silver Bear and Blue Angel prizes at the Berlinale for his stunning Daybreak (2004) alongside two Guldbagge Awards for Best Director and Best Screenplay. His 2011 film Happy End won the Jury Prize for Best Cinematography at the San Sebastian Film Festival. Runge is currently completing a film essay titled ‘Conversations Over The Horizon’ and has a new book to be published next year.
