Plastic – In Cinemas April 30 – Miami in Popular Culture

17 April 2014

With its luxurious beaches and glamourous nightlife, Miami is the perfect setting for exciting new heist drama Plastic.

Seduced by the idea of living the high-life, a group of university students turned credit card fraudsters take their scam on the road to Miami, the city of ‘high stakes’.

To celebrate the theatrical release of Plastic on April 30, we take a look at other popular culture projects that have chosen the US city as their spectacular backdrop...

Will Smith song ‘Miami’

The soundtrack to your summer and every 90s kid’s go-to karaoke tune, Will Smith’s ‘Miami’ is the perfect ode to this US city. With a music video that pays homage to Miami’s sun, sea and sand as well as it’s bustling social spots, it’s no wonder the song’s visual won Best Male Video at the MTV VMAs. Eva Mendes even makes a cameo and if Miami’s good enough for a gorgeous actress like Eva, then it’s good enough for us!

Kourtney and Khloe Take Miami/ Kourtney and Kim Take Miami

Kourtney and Khloe Take Miami - later renamed Kourtney and Kim Take Miami following a quick swap of Kardashians – follows the sisters as they launch a second branch of their clothing store D-A-S-H in, you guessed it, Miami. The girls have since starred in a spinoff based in New York and have recently announced upcoming project Kourtney and Khloe Take the Hamptons.

The Real Housewives of Miami

With shows set in Orange County, New York and Beverly Hills, it was only a matter time before the richness and bitchiness of the Real Housewives franchise descended upon Miami. Premiering in 2011, the reality show has so far run for three series. Following the lives of Miami’s wealthy and wild women, the show is the seventh regional version of the Bravo docusoap.

Grand Theft Auto Vice City

What’s the biggest honour a city can be bestowed? Having a Grand Theft Auto video game modelled after your location…obviously. The clever designers behind GTA Vice City did just that and based the fictional city on the streets of Miami. The game is also said to be heavily influenced by 80s cop show Miami Vice, which brings us on to our next point…

Miami Vice

Though it perhaps didn’t portray Miami in the best light (you know, with all the drug trafficking and everything), this crime drama truly showcased the city’s vibrancy, music culture and men’s fashion in the 80s. Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx stepped into Crockett and Tubbs’ shoes in 2006 to bring us a film adaptation of the iconic TV series.

Miami Ink

Miami was the first on the list when it came to finding locations for a brand new tattoo shop reality series in 2005. Attracting celebrity customers such as Craig Ferguson and Jackass’s Bam Margera; Miami Ink was so successful that it went on to spawn several spinoffs including LA Ink, NY Ink and London Ink.

Miami7

On behalf of pop fans everywhere, this late 90s nugget of cheesiness just had to be included in the list. Following the Miami-based adventures of popband S Club 7, this 13-part series told the story of the British group’s bid for fame across the pond. Framing Miami as a land of opportunity, the show spawned further series based in LA, Hollywood and Spain.
