Puss in Boots’ Antonio Banderas set to play Pablo Picasso in 33 Days

21 February 2012

Spanish born multi award winning actor Antonio Banderas famed for the likes of The Mask of Zorro, The Legend of Zorro and franchises including Spy Kids and Shrek has landed the role of Pablo Picasso in 33 Dias (33 Days).

While Picasso has received the big screen treatment before in James Ivory's Surviving Picasso which concentrated on various women he was emotionally involved with and was a broader film, Variety report that 33 Days will follow the artist's life during the 33 days he spent painting his famous mural Guernica as well as his complicated love affair with French artist Dora Maar.

In a recent interview with Spanish newspaper El Pais Banderas said "Picasso is a character that has pursued me for a long time and I always rejected. He deserves a lot of respect because I am from Malaga, and I was born four blocks from where he was born."

Production on the film is set to begin next summer under the direction of Carlos Saura who wrote the film with Elias Querejeta and French writer Louis-Charles Sirjacq.

Banderas was last seen in Steven Soderbergh's Haywire alongside MMA fighter Gina Carano and will next be seen in Black Gold with Freida Pinto on February 24.
