Richard Armitage as Thorin Oakenshield from The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey revealed

18 July 2011

With the rest of the dwarf contingent revealed, it was only a matter of time before Thorin Oakenshield from The Hobbit prequel films got his day in the sun.

And that day is today, Peter Jackson via TheOneRing.net has released the first image of Richard Armitage in full dwarf gear as the leader of the dwarves.

So who is Oakenshield? Well his backstory is intimately tied to that of giant dragon Smaug, who destroyed the dwarf kingdom of Erebor and slaughtered many of his kin.

Armitage is best known as the villain in Robbin Hood and for his role in Spooks on the BBC, he will also pop up in Captain America: The First Avenger later this month.

The hotly anticipated first part of the 2 part prequel The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey hits cinemas on December 14 2012 and sees Bilbo Baggins, a Hobbit, journeys to the Lonely Mountain accompanied by a group of dwarves to reclaim a treasure taken from them by the dragon Smaug.

The Peter Jackson directed adaptation of the Tolkien classic stars Cate Blanchett, Martin Freeman, Orlando Bloom, Elijah Wood, Christopher Lee, Hugo Weaving, Ian McKellen, Andy Serkis, James Nesbitt, Graham McTavish, Ian Holm, Lee Pace, Stephen Fry, Benedict Cumberbatch, Luke Evans, Evangeline Lilly and Barry Humphries.
