Robert Downey Jr. and Tim Burton circling Warner Bros. Pinocchio adaptation

08 January 2012

The Hollywood Reporter report that an iconic Hollywood director and sought after talent are circling a live action version of the Pinocchio story that's currently being developed by Warner Bros.

According to the report, Frankenweenie director Tim Burton is interested in helming the film, while Sherlock Holmes himself Robert Downey Jr. is interested in working with Burton and is after the role of Gepetto.

The film will see the puppet maker on a mission to reunite with his wooden offspring which has been written by Pushing Daisies' Bryan Fuller.

If the WB manage to get Burton and Downey Jr. who are two of the most bankable in Hollywood, it would potentially be one of their biggest properties and help to close the Harry Potter shaped void.

However, like Snow White this isn't the only Pinocchio project out there, if this gets off the ground it will have to compete with Guillermo del Toro's 3D stop-motion adaptation of Carlo Collodi's classic story as well as the Big Fish-esque prequel that has Shawn Levy attached.

While Burton puts the finishing touches on his adaptation of the cult television classic Dark Shadows, Downey Jr. will be seen as Iron Man in Joss Whedon's superhero ensemble The Avengers on April 27.
