Roberto Orci steps away from the Directors Chair of Star Trek 3

06 December 2014

With a third outing for the crew of the Enterprise coming to cinemas it has been reported that Roberto Orci will not direct the hotly anticipated sequel, instead he will continue as a Producer.

Deadline report that Orci, who was to make his directorial debut with Star Trek 3, took the helm following the departure of J.J Abrams for Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens will remain associated with the project strictly as a producer, whilst Paramount Pictures search for a new filmmaker to take the helm of the Enterprise.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and Cornetto Trilogy filmmaker Edgar Wright has been tipped as the frontrunner to succeed Orci.

Orci's own commitment to Star Trek 3 facilitated his decision to drop out as director of Lionsgate's Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and whilst little is known about Star Trek 3, the cast of Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin, Karl Urban and John Cho are expected to reprise their respective roles and rumour has it that a certain William Shatner is in talks to reprise his iconic role as Captain Kirk.

Star Trek 3 is expected to shoot early next year.
