30 January 2012

Her star is certainly rising, so much so that Rooney Mara has caught the attention of Steven Soderbergh as she is taking the lead role in his upcoming pharmaceutical psycho-thriller Side Effects.

Deadline reports that The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo has replaced Blake Lively in the thriller that boasts a cast of Jude Law, Channing Tatum and Catherine Zeta-Jones.

Mara takes on the role of Emily Hawkins, an anxious and depressed woman with an addiction to prescription drugs. She unknowingly murders her husband while on the drugs and is put on trial while Tatum will play her husband and Zeta-Jones and Law are portraying doctors who treat Mara's character.

The Informant! and Contagion screenwriter Scott Z Burns has penned the script for the film that will reportedly be Soderbergh's last film before he retires.

As for Mara, she'll soon be working on Terrence Malick's music drama Lawless with The Dark Knight Rises hero Christian Bale.
