When Walt Disney’s daughters begged him to make a movie of their favorite book, P.L. Travers’ “Mary Poppins,” he made them a promise—one that he didn’t realize would take 20 years to keep. In his quest to obtain the rights, Walt comes up against a curmudgeonly, uncompromising writer who has absolutely no intention of letting her beloved magical nanny get mauled by the Hollywood machine. But, as the books stop selling and money grows short, Travers reluctantly agrees to go to Los Angeles to hear Disney’s plans for the adaptation.

Boasting 2 Oscars, 3 Emmys, 4 Golden Globes, 5 People’s Choice Awards and handfuls of other awards and nominations, Tom Hanks is an undoubtedly amazing actor and producer. Before the release of SAVING MR. BANKS on the 29 November, we are taking a look back at Tom Hank’s top ten films...

BIG (1988)

Serving as the role establishing him as a major Hollywood, Tom Hanks stars in Big. The 1988 American fantasy comedy film directed by Penny Marshall depicts the story of a young boy trapped in an adult body after he makes a wish to be ‘big’.  BIg was nominated for two Oscars, providing Hanks with his first Academy Award nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role.

Sleepless in Seattle (1993)

Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan star in the classic chick flick that has broken hearts for decades in the romantic comedy, Sleepless in Seattle.  The story of a recently-widowed man and his son’s dedicated attempt to call a radio talk show in attempt to find his father a partner is heart-warming and moving. With a climatic meeting at the top of the Empire State Building and an original soundtrack, the movie was nominated for two Academy Awards.

Forrest Gump (1994)

It’s rare to have a movie as ingrained in pop-culture as Forrest Gump. Everybody has seen this classic film.  Hanks plays a simple man with good intentions, falling for his best and only friend Jenny Curran. He joins the army where he met new friends, wins medals and is accidently present at many historic events. Hanks gives an award winning performance in the film that made more than $677 Million worldwide.

Saving Private Ryan (1998)

Tom Hanks and Matt Damon star is the classic film, Saving Private Ryan.  The plot follows the story of a group of U.S. soldiers who go behind enemy lines to retrieve a paratrooper whose  brothers have been killed in action. The World War II film received five Academy Awards including Best Director, Best Cinematography and Best Effects.

Toy Story Trilogy (1995, 1999, 2010)

Tom Hanks was the voice that brought the loveable string doll Woody to life. In the triumphant Toy Story series, the Disney Pixar tales focused on a group of toys that secretly came to life and set about some life-changing adventures. Toy Story 3 continues to take the lead in Pixar’s highest grossing film.

The Green Mile (1999)

Tom Hanks showcased his talents again playing Paul, a death row corrections officer during the depression in the 1930’s, in the award winning film The Green Mile. This iconic film was nominated for four Academy Awards including Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Picture.

Cast Away (2000)

From director Robert Zemeckis comes the archetypal survival film, Cast Away. Embodying all the essential ingredients for an award winning survival film Cast Away, follows the story of a FedEx executive stranded on an island forced to transform himself physically and emotionally to survive a crash landing.  Cast Away was written by William Broyles and Robert Zemeckis, both craft a truly entertaining picture about alienation and companionship. Tom Hanks is a genuine revelation in the main role and does an amazing job of leading a movie where his main co-star is a volleyball. The film was well received with audience as well as critics as it won two Oscar nominations and one Golden Globe win for Hanks winning Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama.

Catch Me If You Can (2002)

Hanks played an FBI agent on the hunt for young con artist Frank, Leonardo Di Caprio, in the film Catch Me If You Can. Although the pair play a cat and mouse game for some time, after striking a deal you see they develop a friendship. The film received 96% positive reviews on popular review website Rotten Tomatoes, and elements of the film were even parodied in The Simpsons, making a success for any move. 

The Da Vinci Code (2006)

Tom Hanks brought Dan Brown bestselling novel to life in 2006 and in return this was the best domestic opening for one of Hank’s films. Despite the film receiving much negative critique the film over almost $230million in its opening weekend and became the second highest grossing film of 2006.

Saving Mr Banks (2013)

In Disney’s highly anticipated Saving Mr Banks Tom Hanks plays Walt Disney, following him on his pursuit of P. L. Travers the author of Mary Poppins in a bid to win her over and obtain the rights to bring the famous super nanny to the big screen.
