Shaun Wren gives us an update on DCCU’s Suicide Squad

03 March 2015

Even though we are over a year away from seeing the Suicide Squad causing havoc in the DC Cinematic Universe, director David Ayer has been teasing fans on Twitter posting cryptic tweets or pictures.

The Fury director has let fans know pre–production is in full swing posting with some of the set going up and confirmed what we all already knew that this movie is part of the DCCU and mentioned Zack Snyder as Executive Producer. Which begs the question could we see The Joker or Amanda Waller or anyone from Suicide Squad in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

Speaking of The Joker we are starting to get an image of what he might look like after Jared Leto was eating during an interview with Billboard magazine and apologised explaining “I’m trying to gain weight. It means I have to eat every couple of hours – and I’m terrible at eating a lot.”

The Oscar winner also went on to describe what drew him to the role and following in the infamous footsteps of Jack Nicholson and the late Heath Ledger “The opportunity to take on this nearly Shakespearean character – that’s what graphic novels and comic books are becoming, right? (He’s) this beautiful disaster of a character – what a big challenge.”

It will be a challenge and what a poetic way to describe a homicidal manic and after a fan tweeted to ask if he could describe the Clown Prince of Crime in one word, Ayer simply replied “Majestic”.

Leto has now began his transformation as he’s lost the beard and had his long locks cut and looks very different from the last week’s Oscars even taking to Instagram confessing “I miss my beard already”.

Other cast members have been letting fans know what’s in store for their characters as Margot Robbie described taking the role of Harley Quinn as “daunting” but went on to add “you don’t need to have commitment issues to be frightened by the fact that you might have just signed 10 years of your life away.

But with (Harley), it’s a character I don’t think would ever get boring. Ever. So if they did Suicide Squad One, Two and Three… I would be over the moon.”

Robbie also talked about how she got the role “I actually got offered this one, I didn’t audition, which is a real step up as an actor when you can get offered things.”

I think Robbie got offered this role because she’s the only actor I can see playing Harley Quinn and even though she’s scared of taking on the beloved fan favourite character like Quinn, she’s willing to take it on and commit and bring her to life on the big screen, somethng we have never seen before. It also sounds like these films could be some sort of superhero Spaghetti Western. Which sounds great, but let's get this first one off the ground.

It was also confirmed that Viola Davis has joined the cast as Amanda Waller and when talking to The Hollywood Reporter the Oscar nominee and Tony winner sounded excited saying “As a comic book and Wonder Woman fan, I love the whole DC Comics universe. I traded comic books when I was a kid, so all that appeals to me. When you dream about being an actor as a kid, that’s what you dream about.

That’s like play acting: being the superhero, getting the gun; it plays into that fantasy.” This is brilliant Davis has said this because even though I thought she’ll be amazing in the role the fact she’s a DC Comics fan will show and it makes me more excited to see The Wall on the big screen.

Ayer isn’t just teasing the fans he’s also teasing the actors with Robbie’s Focus and soon to be Suicide Squad co–star Will Smith saying “It’s really cool the way that David Ayer works is all images, all ideas.

He holds (back) the screenplay and he just keeps giving you things about your character – he just wants you to be prepared for anything. He only sends you your character stuff so you don’t know what’s going on with the other characters . I think he wants it to come alive on set.”

Smith also talked about Deadshot and says he still has work to do on the character “I haven’t explored the psychology enough of Deadshot – somebody who can take money to kill people, how he justifies that for himself. But in my life in general and in my career, I’m pushing more towards those kind of questions. I guess I like the concept of dubious morals. I always like to play in that area.”

We still haven’t heard anything from the other two cast members Cara Delevingne who will bring Enchantress to life on the big screen and Jai Courtney (Captain Boomerang). While it’s still rumoured Joel Kinnaman is replacing Tom Hardy as Rick Flag.

We’ll probably find out information on Boomerang when Courtney promotes Insurgent or Terminator: Genisys and Kinnaman will probably stay tight lipped while promoting his new film Run All Night but I know how big Enchantress’ role will be because she isn’t a well known character and has confusing mythology to how she got her magical powers.

If anything could she be the one the Suicide Squad have to take on because Waller doesn’t trust Enchantress’ supernatural powers?? It's anyone's guess at this point.
