Shawn Wren gives us the lowdown on the San Diego International Comic-Con DC Panel
Last weekend at San Diego Comic Con, Warner Bros blew shit up (maybe not for the first hour during The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and Pan panels) when David Ayer came out on stage to talk about Suicide Squad.
Ayer has publicly laid the smackdown saying "Who’s got the best bad guys out there? DC Comics, I’m not trying to start no East Coast West Coast feud with Marvel Comics but someone has got to say the truth."
He then paid homage to the fans, adding “You guys run this shit! It’s about canon, being faithful to the source material. You guys know your shit and you’re gonna get it."
This is when an ‘exclusive’ trailer/teaser was shown and afterwards Margot Robbie, Will Smith and the rest of the cast came out to surprise fans. However, Jared Leto, who’s playing the Joker, was not there.
The cast was only in Toronto the day before shooting so this was only a quick hello and wave, but Smith did quickly say something praising his director “This guy tells the absolute truth. He is making something you will all love."
If you’d like to watch the panel then check out the Schmoes Know coverage.
This surprise was slightly over showed after someone filmed the trailer, which was only for people in Hall H, and leaked it on YouTube, which disappointed not only the 47 year old director who tweeted “Shame our sneak peek Hall H footage was leaked. #notcool it's unfair to the fans who waited in line. And not how I intended folks to see it.”
But also Sue Kroll, President Worldwide Marketing and International Distrbrition for Warner Bros, released a statement saying,
"Warner Bros. Pictures and our anti-piracy team have worked tirelessly over the last 48 hours to contain the Suicide Squad footage that was pirated from Hall H on Saturday. We have been unable to achieve that goal.
Today we will release the same footage that has been illegally circulating on the web, in the form it was created and high quality with which it was intended to be enjoyed. We regret this decision as it was our intention to keep the footage as a unique experience for the Comic Con crowd, but we cannot continue to allow the film to be represented by the poor quality of the pirated footage stolen from our presentation."
It’s understandable WB's disappointed, but the era of Comic Con exclusives doesn’t exist anymore the only way it can happen if fans handed in their phones before and collect them afterwards but that would be too much of a hassle.
If you haven’t seen the teaser trailer, WHY NOT!?! IT’S AWESOME!! We have the OFFICIAL HD TRAILER BELOW for your viewing pleasure!
After shocking fans with Ayer and co, everyone was super excited for the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice panel with Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, Jesse Eisenberg, Amy Adams, Jeremy Irons and Holly Hunter joining director Zack Snyder on stage.
They revealed the first official trailer both at the con and online, to stop the bootlegged versions getting released, and it showed why The Dark Knight and Man of Steel are fighting plus we got a first look at Wonder Woman for the first time ever on the big screen and Eisenberg’s Lex Luther.
There were also a number of Easter Eggs and teases but check it out for yourself.
During the panel Snyder talked about the importance of the Batman’s armoured suit and clarified it doesn’t give him any extra strength but just protects him from a Superman beatdown.
Then Snyder talked about the difference between Metropolis and Gotham saying the former is for the higher earners while the latter is downtrodden and it was revealed they’re sister cites being compared to San Francisco and Oakland.
Talking about the inspiration for the film, it’s less centred on the classic Frank Miller mini series The Dark Knight Returns then people think Snyder saying “There’s been a lot of talk of my love for a particular comic book, The Dark Knight Returns…I definitely homage in the movie, as a way to say to Frank Miler, ‘I love your work'…but this story is not that story."

The WB/DC panel also conformed the new Green Lantern film will be called “Green Lantern Corps” but no confirmation of who will be suited up despite rumours of Chris Pine as Hal Jordan and Tyrese Gibson’s one man campaign to become John Stewart.
They also showcased a reel of title artwork for Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman, Justice League 1 & 2, The Flash, Aquaman, Cyborg and Green Lantern Corps.
Finally, there was a concept art of Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and Aquaman plus a first look at Erza Miller’s Flash and Cyborg played by Ray Fisher. The reaction to both in Hall H seems to be hugely positive, but those unable to be at the panel will have to wait until Warner Bros feels ready to release them.
