Shrek 4 to open Tribeca film festival

02 March 2010

The fourth and final Shrek adventure will have its world premiere at the Tribeca film festival in New York next month, organisers have announced.

DreamWorks Animation's Shrek Forever After is in 3D and sees the big green curmudgeon duped into signing a contract which results in him being transported to an alternate version of the land of Far Far Away where he and his wife Fiona have never met.

Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz and Antonio Banderas, who voice Shrek, Donkey, Fiona and Puss in Boots respectively, are all returning for the film. DreamWorks will be hoping that it repeats the spectacular box-office feats of previous instalments, which have made more than $2bn (£1.3bn) worldwide since 2001.

The most recent episode, Shrek the Third, took $798m in 2007 but was poorly received by critics. The final film has Deuce Bigalow's Mike Mitchell at the reins.

This will be the ninth edition of the Tribeca film festival, which was co-founded in 2001 by Robert De Niro in the wake of the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center. The full lineup for this year's festival, which runs from 21 April to 2 May, will be announced in the coming weeks.
