Sony set a release date for The Smurfs sequel

09 August 2011

Despite less than positive reviews, Sony have announced a release date for a sequel to The 3D take on the Peyo classic The Smurfs.

The Smurfs has opened strong stateside with more than $135 million in the blue bank so the studio isn't wasting any time and have set a August 2 2013 release date with Jordan Kerner on producing duties.

When the evil wizard Gargamel chases the tiny blue Smurfs out of their village, they tumble from their magical world and into ours - in fact, smack dab in the middle of New York's Central Park.  The Smurfs must find a way to get back to their village before Gargamel tracks them down.

Only time will tell if it has the same success in the UK as it has had in the States, The Smurfs sees its UK release tomorrow and stars Neil Patrick Harris, Jayma Mays, Sofía Vergara, Anton Yelchin, Hank Azaria, Alan Cumming, Paul Reubens, George Lopez and Katy Perry.
