Spider-Man joins Marvel Cinematic Universe in Landmark Deal

10 February 2015

Amidst all the rumours of it happening, in a landmark U-turn, it has been confirmed that Spider-Man will indeed suit up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The new deal will allow Spider-Man to appear alongside Iron Man, Captain America, Thor and the other heroes in future films, however US reports suggest that Andrew Garfield will not reprise his role.but Marvel's Kevin Feige will produce the next Spider-Man with Amy Pascal, due to hit cinemas on July 28 2017.

Sony Pictures will continue to finance, distribute, own and have final creative control of the Spider-Man films, and to accommodate the deal, Marvel's parent company Disney have rejigged some of their Phase Three slate with Thor: Ragnorak moving from July 28 2017 to November 3 2017 and Chadwick Boseman's Black Panther moving from November 3 2017 to July 6 2018.

Other shifts see Captain Marvel move to November 2018 and the Inhumans move to summer 2019.

Personally, I didn't think it was going to happen until Phase Four, but Marvel have a lot of work to do for Phase Three and with the addition of Spider-Man, that does change things and with Spidey in the MCU, it opens up more of the universe to be explored! This is exciting and very welcomed news.

In a statement, Walt Disney Company chairman and CEO Bob Iger said "Spider-Man is one of Marvel's great characters, beloved around the world.

We're thrilled to work with Sony Pictures to bring the iconic web-slinger into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which opens up fantastic new opportunities for storytelling and franchise building."

Sony Pictures Entertainment chairman and CEO Michael Lynton added "We always want to collaborate with the best and most successful filmmakers to grow our franchises and develop our characters.

Marvel, Kevin Feige and Amy, who helped orchestrate this deal, are the perfect team to help produce the next chapter of Spider-Man. This is the right decision for the franchise, for our business, for Marvel, and for the fans."

This is something fans have wanted for a long time and it will surely make for an awesome entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The question is though 'Which Spider-Man do they go with?'
