STARZPLAY Acquires True-Crime Inspired Limited Series DR. DEATH Exclusively In Select European And Latin American Territories

Starzplay, the international premium streaming service from Starz, announced today that it has closed a licensing agreement with NBCUniversal Global Distribution for the hotly-anticipated limited series “Dr. Death,” which is based on the shocking real-life events surrounding a Texas surgeon who earned the nickname for his maiming of more than 30 patients between 2012 and 2013. The platform will stream the series exclusively in Belgium, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, the UK, and throughout Latin America, including Brazil and Mexico.
This is the newest series brought to the global streamer who is already the home of bold and unique premium content such as global sensations “The Great,” “Normal People” and STARZ Original series from the “Power” Universe, “P-Valley” and more.
Based on the hit U.S.podcast from Wondery, “Dr. Death” is based on the terrifying true story of Dr. Christopher Duntsch (Joshua Jackson), a rising star in the Dallas medical community. Young, charismatic and ostensibly brilliant, Dr. Duntsch was building a flourishing neurosurgery practice when everything suddenly changed. Patients entered his operating room for complex but routing spinal surgeries and left permanently maimed or dead. As victims piled up, two fellow physicians, neurosurgeon Robert Henderson (Alec Baldwin) and vascular surgeon Randall Kirby (Christian Slater), set out to stop him. “Dr. Death” explores the twisted mind of Dr. Duntsch and the failures of the system designed to protect the most defenseless among us.

“Dr. Death” stars Joshua Jackson (“Little Fires Everywhere,” “The Affair,” “When They See Us”) as the titular character, along with Alec Baldwin (A Star is Born, “30 Rock,” “Saturday Night Live”), Christian Slater (“Dirty John,” “Mr. Robot”), Grace Gummer (“Mr. Robot,” “The Hot Zone”), Anna Sophia Robb (“The Act,” “Little Fires Everywhere”) and Carrie Preston (“Claws,” “The Good Wife”).
The series boasts an all-female directing team which includes Maggie Kiley (“Dirty John”, “Riverdale”, “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina”), who will also executive produce the first two episodes; Jennifer Morrison (“Euphoria”), and So Yong Kim (“Tales from the Loop,” “Room 104”).
Produced by UCP, a division of Universal Studio Group, “Dr. Death” is executive produced by Patrick Macmanus (“The Girl from Plainville”) via his Littleton Road Productions banner, under his overall deal with UCP. Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, Steve Tisch and Taylor Latham also executive produce via Escape Artists, as well as Hernan Lopez and Marshall Lewy of Wondery.
