Stuart Bannerman shares his thoughts on LAST GIRL STANDING which is out now on Digital HD and VOD courtesy of FrightFest Presents

Five years ago, a masked killer known in the media as ‘The Hunter’ brutally murdered a group of friends. Since then, Camryn (Akasha Villalobos), the lone survivor, has struggled to reclaim her shattered life. Wracked with guilt and paranoia, Camryn leads a depressingly lonely existence until Nick (Brian Villalobos), a new co-worker, befriends Camryn and attempts to integrate her into his group of friends. Just when she might be ready to start a new life, Camryn’s past comes back to haunt her. Can Camryn ever have a life again, or is she destined to be alone? Part slasher movie, part character study, Last Girl Standing is a penetrating and intimate look at what happens to the survivors of horror movies.

Going into Last Girl Standing without knowing anything about it, led me to believe I was about to watch yet another classic style slasher movie, akin to Friday the 13th, Halloween and many more films that I have seen over the years, and the first few minutes of the film didn’t change my opinion. Last Girl Standing gets straight into the bones of it (pun intended) with some horror gore and chase scenes. Great stuff for all horror fans.

But soon after the film takes a different turn, and this is where a recommendation comes in handy for viewers. If you think you are about to watch a gore fest, then think again. Last Girl Standing is better described as a character drama, taking us into the world of the survivor of a slasher spree. So often in slasher films the events end and the credits role, we don't find out what happened to the survivors, we don't learn if there is any lasting mental damage after the blood stops leaking. Last Girl Standing answers that question with a fantastic and mental performance by Akasha Villalobos who flips back and forth from being a sympathetic character to a character we don't much care for, but that's exactly the point.

I would describe the film as a slow burn but with pay offs. Horror fans do certainly get what they want and fans of drama films will also get what they want. It's a perfect blend of people and mayhem with shocks thrown in at the right times.

I love seeing a film that I know nothing about, it's how I find the best films of the year. Definitely check out Last Girl Standing and see if your thoughts are on par with mine.
