StudioCanal and Picturehouse Cinemas Partner to ccreen CAROL in 35MM
STUDIOCANAL and Picturehouse Cinemas have announced they will present Todd Haynes’ CAROL in 35mm for the film’s UK release on November 27th.
CAROL will receive a rare presentation in 35mm projection for the film’s release at Picturehouse Central and will subsequently play at sites across the UK with 35mm capabilities.
Originally shot on film, audiences will have the chance to experience Director Todd Haynes’ visually captivating, 1950s set romance in its true cinematic glory.
On Tuesday 24th November at Picturehouse Central, cinema goers can enjoy a preview of CAROL in 35mm, followed by a Q&A with award-winning Director Todd Haynes. The screening follows Central’s Todd Haynes Triple Bill on Sunday 22nd November, where three of the Director’s most beloved films (SAFE, FAR FROM HEAVEN and I’M NOT THERE) will also screen from 35mm prints.
Todd Haynes, Director: "We are delighted that Picturehouse and STUDIOCANAL are partnering to present CAROL in 35mm for its UK release. The film was originally shot on 16mm in order to preserve the rich grains and texture so often lost in today's digital processes. Even films that are shot on film today are usually edited and projected digitally but this is a rare exception. At Picturehouse Cinemas audiences can witness the richness and subtlety of Ed Lachman's gorgeous cinematography in this projection of CAROL from a 35mm film print!"
Clare Binns, Director of Programming and Acquisitions at Picturehouse Cinemas: "Picturehouse recognise that there is still an important place for 35mm and if directors want to use it then we want to give cinema-goers a chance to see it.
I am thrilled that Todd's vision of releasing his remarkable film Carol, in 35mm, is being realised and with thanks to the commitment of STUDIOCANAL, will be shown on the big screen at Picturehouse Central and other Picturehouses over the coming weeks."
Danny Perkins, STUDIOCANAL UK Chief Executive: "We are incredibly proud to partner with Picturehouse on the 35mm presentation of CAROL. It is important that the industry continues to celebrate the medium of film, offering multiple formats, not just digital projection. CAROL has been described by critics as 'a love letter to cinema' and we are delighted to compliment this by further enhancing the cinematic experience of Todd Haynes' exquisite film for UK audiences."
A young woman in her 20s, Therese Belivet (Rooney Mara) is a clerk working in a Manhattan department store and dreaming of a more fulfilling life when she meets Carol (Cate Blanchett), an alluring woman trapped in a loveless, convenient marriage. As an immediate connection sparks between them, the innocence of their first encounter dims and their connection deepens.
Based on Patricia Highsmith’s seminal novel, The Price of Salt, adapted by Emmy nominated screenwriter Phyllis Nagy, directed by Todd Haynes, CAROL stars Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, Kyle Chandler, Jake Lacy and Sarah Paulson.
CAROL is produced by Elizabeth Karlsen and Stephen Woolley of Number 9 Films alongside Christine Vachon of Killer Films. CAROL was developed by Film4 who also co-financed the film and is produced in association with Larkhark Films Limited, for STUDIOCANAL, Hanway Films, Goldcrest, Dirty Films, InFilm. Executive Producers are Tessa Ross, Dorothy Berwin, Thorsten Schumacher and Bob Weinstein, Harvey Weinstein, Danny Perkins and Cate Blanchett, Andrew Upton, Robert Jolliffe, and is co-produced by Gwen Bialic.
