Taking A Closer Look At Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Iconic Detective, SHERLOCK HOLMES, And Why He Is Still A Netflix Favourite

26 March 2018

Starting off this article about perhaps the most well-known detective in all of history, one is quite tempted to begin with the stereotypical “It’s elementary, dear Watson” quote. A saying that everyone knows is one of the favourite things that old Sherlock Holmes, the beloved detective, loves to quip when about to explain his takings on how any given murder-mystery happened, with Sherlock’s rendition on how the mystery is solved is about to unfold…

Hence the makings of another epic tale befitting the duo that is Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson.

This epic detective duo, being the fictitious characters that make up the detective series of books written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, have indeed captured the imagination and hearts of many, since their inception by the author. Since then, countless numbers of avid Sherlock Holmes fans have traipsed great adventures, mysteries and wonders with Sherlock Holmes, and his trusted confidant, Dr. John Watson, with each turn of the detective-book series’ page.

From the very first film adaptation of the Sherlock Holmes novels, which evidently can be traced way back to 1900 with the film named ‘Sherlock Holmes Baffled’, audiences have come to find this ingenious detective quite endearing, and have simply taken a keen liking to the character that Holmes projects all round.

Following on from this first film appearance, there have been many more renditions of filmatic television, gaming and theatrical productions, all of which have the characters of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson in common.

Fun Fact:

Did you know that according to the Guinness World Records, the human literary character that is found most often on screens (big and small) is ‘Sherlock Holmes’.

Check out the table below for a very brief synopsis of the more popular portrayals of our favourite detective Sherlock.

Year released Description of production
1900 Sherlock Holmes Baffled’- known as the very first film adaptation of Holmes
1916 Sherlock Holmes’ - an American silent film
1932 Sherlock Holmes’ - a film directed by William K. Howard

Let’s talk a bit about the Netflix fascination with Sherlock… We sure do love us some Netflixing moments. I mean picture it: feet up, sofa-lounging-mode and ready to binge that series. What makes Netflix even more appealing is its collection of Sherlock Holmes cinematic offerings. Not only offering the ‘Sherlock’ crime drama series for fans to enjoy, but also the Guy Ritchie renditions, where Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law take on the Holmes and Watson personas; thanks Netflix, entertainment deluxe here we come!

Thanks to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and his iconic characters that he had created while writing his detective series of books, the whole world at large has been given ample hours of entertainment and avenues of pleasure, right throughout the last century. If the longevity factor alone is not enough to convince one that in fact, yes, Holmes and Watson are the ultimate favourite detective duo, of most anybody, of all time, then I’m not sure anything will do the convincing.

Either way, in my book, it is safe to say that we stand among the many that see the allure and agree that ol’ Sherlock Holmes and his trusted companion, Dr. Watson is still a firm favourite and will remain endearing to us and all the television, film and gaming fans the world over.
