The Art of Getting By out September 2 – True Love Feature

19 August 2011

The Art of Getting By stars Freddie Highmore (Finding Neverland, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) as George, a lonely and fatalistic teen who's made it all the way to his senior year without ever having done a real day of work, who is befriended by Sally (Emma Roberts - Scream 4), a beautiful and complicated girl who recognizes in him a kindred spirit.

Was the first guy that you fell in love with the one that you can see yourself being with now? Or was your first true love the one that broke your heart and made you question love? In The Art of Getting By, even though George, Sally, and most importantly we are left happy at the end, these two have some strong romantic ups and downs, and both are left questioning love at some point in time.

Here we take a look at the romantic ups and downs in movies throughout the years...

Grease (1978)

Would you change who you are to be with the man you love? Now I know us girls have always been told to be proud of who we are. “Don’t change you for anyone,” Mom would always say. But this is the man of your dreams and someone as perfect as Danny Zuko will only stumble across your path once in a lifetime. Let’s hypothesize for a moment: one romantic summer you meet and fall in love at the beach with a boy who has wide eyes of the most piercing crystal blue, slicked-back dark hair, dimples and warm voice that tells you, “this is only the beginning.” You just hit the jackpot! You see each other at school the following year and in order to maintain his cool-dude image in front of his friends, this dreamy boy you met at the beach acts like seeing you doesn’t even matter. It doesn’t faze him one bit. How dare he treat you like that? What gives him the right to toy with your emotions as though you were some disposable plaything?

50 First Dates (2004)

50 First Dates is nice refresher after Grease. Perhaps the perfect example of true love in the worst possible situation, Adam Sandler’s persistence in this film will make any girl smile and want to go out a find that down-to-earth caring guy we all want. Imagine after years of searching you finally find that perfect guy who literally and unconditionally loves you no matter what; he loves every perfection and imperfection about you. The only problem is you can’t remember who he is. Adam Sandler’s Henry Roth goes to a local Hawaiian café and meets Drew Barrymore’s Lucy Whitmore. The two are instantly fond of one another, but Lucy suffers from a severe case of short-term memory loss that at first makes a possible relationship between the two seem unreachable. Henry is warned to stay away, but he refuses, and with the help of a hilarious cameo from Rob Schneider, eventually turns this impossible romance into the possible. Under the romantic comedy exterior, this is a story about the persistence of love, not completely unlike George’s persistence. It’s another one of those romantically restorative films for all of you who have been heartbroken, and if you ever stumble upon a guy like Henry, nab him right away.

High School Musical (2006)

If only all of our high school romances could be like the one between Troy and Gabriella. The basketball captain and the shy schoolgirl meet at a New Year’s Eve party. While Troy is playing basketball, thoughts of Gabriella fill his mind. She’s got him right where she wants him! This is a story that truly captures the innocent relationships of every girl’s high school days.

Twilight (2008)

We have arrived at the be all and end all of which every girl hopes and dreams... Edward. Just the name gives us the quivers and sends the shivers down our spines. He is the very idea of romance. So you’re seated next to a mysterious and gorgeous boy in class who gives you the cold shoulder at first. We like mysterious guys, but it couldn’t hurt to be a little courteous at first could it? But the next couple of times you two cross paths, he starts warming up to you and you to him. One day, one of your classmates almost runs you over with his van, and there he is, the mysterious boy has appeared out of nowhere and come to your rescue. But what’s more, he stopped the van with his bare hands. You have to find out more about him. As your relationship with him grows, you realize he will do anything to protect you, and isn’t that what we all want. Edward is willing to give his life for Bella, is willing to put his reputation on the line, and is constantly looking out for her wellbeing.

The Proposal (2009)

So you’ve had your fair share of failed relationships and now there’s a dark resentment towards the opposite sex lurking deep within. I can’t say I blame you after dealing with someone like Danny Zuko. After the INS threatens to deport Margaret Tate her to Canada and away from her cushy executive publishing job, she enlists the help of the Green Lantern... excuse me, Ryan Reynolds as Andrew Paxton, in order to fall under the protection of the marriage clause. This is a true mark of someone that has completely abandoned the idea of love and marriage. But in an unlikely yet still predictable turn of events, she falls in love with the guy to whom she falsely proposes... imagine that. She couldn’t live with herself if she ruined Andrew’s life, but here love is returned by the end and they work together to thwart the spiteful INS.
