THE ART OF RACING IN THE RAIN – In Cinemas August 9 – From HEROES to THIS IS US: Milo Ventimiglia’s Best Roles So Far

31 July 2019

In THE ART OF RACING IN THE RAIN, Milo Ventimiglia stars as Denny, a racecar driver who is devoted to his witty, wise almost human dog, Enzo. More than a pet, Enzo (voiced by Kevin Costner) is Denny’s best friend. Denny meets Eve, a teacher played by Amanda Seyfried; they fall in love, marry and have a baby. With support from Eve and Enzo, Denny learns how to navigate family life, even in times of crisis, using the lessons he’s learned on the race track. Moving, exciting and at times very funny, the film is told from Enzo’s perspective, with the dog’s unique insights into the complexities of family life and the human condition.

Since his breakout role as Jess Mariano in Gilmore Girls, Milo Ventimiglia has transformed from teen heartthrob to highly esteemed actor-status with leading roles in TV dramas, romantic comedies and critically celebrated films alike.

To mark his latest role in Simon Curtis’ The Art of Racing in the Rain (in cinemas 9th August), we’re looking back at some of Milo’s best roles and performances to date....

Grown Ups 2 (2013)

Playing a buff and bleached frat boy in the sequel to the 2010 comedy, Milo certainly showed fans a different side, playing – in his own words – a “jackass yet again”. Talking about working on Grown-Ups 2 with Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Chris Rock and David Spade, he says, “Just goofy antics but those projects are such fun to be on. They’re good for the soul.”

Heroes (2006 – 2010)

For five years, Ventimiglia played ordinary civilian, Peter Petrelli, who finds himself bestowed with the ability to mimic the powers of others, acquiring them simply by being near someone. Upon the announcement of the NBC show’s revival, Heroes Reborn, Ventimiglia ruled out any chance that his character might return, saying on Twitter, “I wish @JackColeman4RLZ and crew the best. I'll be watching."

Second Act (2018)

Playing the love interest to none other than Jennifer Lopez in this 2018 rom-com, Ventimiglia sent pulses racing. On what drew him to the role, he said, “I thought that it was empowering a woman to do better for herself when people were saying she wasn’t worthy of certain positions and certain roles. And I thought that I could contribute to that as well — contribute to playing the supportive romantic interest that just wanted the best for his girl.”

Rocky Balboa Franchise / Creed II (2018)

Ventimiglia hadn’t been a part of the Rocky franchise since his appearance as Rocky’s son in Rocky Balboa (2006), but he wasn’t one to turn down the chance to reprise his role in the spin off sequel Creed II. Although their relationship appeared estranged on-screen, it was nothing but love between the father-son duo when the opportunity to work together again came around, “Every time I saw Sly (Stallone) throughout the years — the last 13 years, bumping into him — he was always so warm with me," Ventimiglia recounted during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

Gilmore Girls (2001 - 2006)

Jess Mariano was a total jerk for the majority of Gilmore Girls but he still absolutely stole viewers hearts (and that of Rory Gilmore). Ventimiglia was passionate and irresistible in the role but he also showed off his comedic talents. Milo made a lot of #TeamJess very happy when he reprised the role briefly in the Gilmore Girls: A Year In The Life revival for Netflix, in 2016.

This Is Us (2017 – Present)

Ventimiglia's current role as Jack on NBC's This Is Us is probably his most heart-breaking, and inspiring role to date. A story which jumps back and forth in time, as the head of the Pearson household Jack holds everyone together and shows that the life lessons he bestowed on his children still have an affect long after his passing, leaving viewers in tears on a weekly basis.

The Art Of Racing In The Rain (2019)

As if he hasn’t already perfected the role of heart-throb love interest, The Art Of Racing In The Rain sees a puppy thrown into the mix too. Based on Garth Stein’s popular 2008 novel of the same name, The Art of Racing in the Rain chronicles the ups and downs of the life of race-car driver Denny Swift (played by Ventimiglia) — including his marriage to wife Eve (Amanda Seyfried) — from the perspective of dog Enzo. “What I loved about Mark [Bomback]’s script was this journey this man had. You understand the focus of a race car driver and the bumps along the road, the rain that happens and the unexpected events that can take us off course — I saw that in Denny’s life,” Ventimiglia says in a statement. “I really love the journey of where Denny started and where he ended, and everything we get to experience along the way, with regards to being a father, a husband, a best friend to Enzo and also being a race car driver.”
