The Lone Ranger’s Johnny Depp reveals he dared Disney to fire him from Pirates of the Caribbean

30 July 2013

While he returns to cinemas with Disney's 3D adventure The Lone Ranger next month, Johnny Depp has revealed how he dared the House of Mouse to fire him from Pirates of the Caribbean after baffling studio executives with his portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow.

Speaking to Reveal, the Hollywood icon revealed that Disney wanted to axe him from the franchise "so bad they could taste it" - until he reminded them they'd still have to pay him explaining "I was probably as close to getting fired as anyone could ever be.

They wanted to fire me so bad they could taste it.

I spoke to one of the execs at the time and said, 'You're right, you should fire me - but you'll have to pay me for my time'.

I approach all characters the same as Jack Sparrow. I add as much as I can get away with and, basically, I've been pretty lucky."

Reiterating his desire to retire from acting, he added "I still don't think I've developed a taste for acting yet. I'm not sure I ever will.

My kids are my biggest achievement. There's nothing else that I've done that even comes close."

The Lone Ranger rides into cinemas on August 9 and features Helena Bonham Carter, Armie Hammer, William Fichtner, Barry Pepper, Tom Wilkinson, James Frain and James Badge Dale.
