The Stag – Out TODAY – The Many faces of Andrew Scott
There are few actors who can seamlessly move from one performance medium to another. From TV mini-series to Broadway to Hollywood box office hits, it takes true talent to shift from one platform to the next.
Irish actor Andrew Scott has done just that - and done it with the utmost modesty and charm. With his next big screen appearance in comedy, The Stag, we’ve taken a look at Scott’s career through the years.
Saving Private Ryan - 1998 Playing the part of a soldier on the beaches of Normandy, Scott was a part of this award winning recreation of World War II D-Day invasion. As a whole, the cast of Private Ryan, starring Tom Hanks, was praised for their realistic and powerful performances re-enacting the terror of the June 6 invasion and the devastating aftermath. This was Scott’s first taste of the Hollywood blockbuster with parts in TV movies and British films prior to his role in Saving Private Ryan. |
Nora - 2000 As Michael Bodkin in the film, Nora, Scott was the former lover of James Joyce’s wife, Nora Barnacle. The film is based on true events from the life of Nora Barnacle and her complex relationships. Before her love with Joyce, Nora was madly in love with Bodkin before he contracted tuberculosis and died. Actress Susan Lynch and Scott portrayed the couple’s relationship as the passionate love affair it was. Nora was an enchanting period drama with intense love relationships woven throughout the life of Nora Barnacle. |
Dead Bodies - 2003 In this sinister and twisted tale revealing the darkness in human nature, Scott is cast in the lead role as Tommy McGann. McGann accidentally murders his girlfriend and buries her body in fear of being put in jail. Throughout the gruesome but suspenseful film, there is a clear display of the failings and deceptive side of the human character. Scott is expertly bitter and depressing as McGann, winning an IFTA Award for Best Actor in his role as McGann. Dead Bodies is a psychological thriller with twists and turns that no one sees coming. |
A Girl in a Car with a Man - 2004 Scott has always been drawn to the stage and was first recognized for his stellar performances in A Girl in a Car with a Man, directed by Joe Hill-Gibbons. Scott starred on stage in the role of Alex and was so convincing, he won a Laurence Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in an Affiliate Theatre. Since this play, Scott has gone on to win numerous awards for his work on stage and is well-known throughout the theatre community for his talent. |
John Adams - 2008 Scott appeared for several episodes in the award winning HBO mini-series, John Adams. The series focused around the life of the 2nd President of the United States, John Adams and the immense influence he had on America in its first 50 years. Scott played Adam’s son-in-law and New York representative, Col. William Stephens Smith. Scott as Adam’s son-in-law illustrated the dutiful relationship Smith had in serving Adams in numerous tasks and jobs throughout his life. The series received more awards than any mini-series in history. |
Sherlock - 2010 In what is considered one of the best British television series of recent years, the Sherlock series is a perfect modern twist on this British classic. In 21st century London, Sherlock is fast paced and witty as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson outsmart evil scientists and thuggish criminals. Scott plays Jim Moriarty, a brilliant criminal master mind and Sherlock’s nemesis. With his clever and outstanding depiction of Moriarty, Scott won a BAFTA and IFTA Award for Best Supporting Actor. Sherlock is filled with superb writing, humorous dialogue, and terrific performances on all accounts. |
The Stag - 2013 In this humorous depiction of the modern day “bromance,” The Stag is charming, enjoyable, and funny. Scott stars as the best man of the movie, leading the pack as they embark on a much needed male bonding trip to the mountains before Fionnan ties the knot. Through their various mishaps and chaotic adventures, the men find a renewed sense of friendship. Scott is endearing and entertaining in one of his first large roles. The Stag easily mixes comedy and drama with the talent of Scott and Peter McDonald leading the way. |
