The Thing Returns To The Big Screen In Stunning 4K Restoration With Special Introduction From Emily Booth + Kim

11 June 2026

John Carpenter's legendary horror classic The Thing is returning to the big screen this Friday, June 12th, in a brand-new 4K restoration as part of Fright Night with Green Screen, hosted by horror icon Emily Booth and her Podcast co-host Kim from the Kim & Em Vs EVIL! Podcast.

Originally released in 1982 and starring Kurt Russell as helicopter pilot R.J. MacReady, The Thing has grown from an initially misunderstood box office disappointment into one of the most celebrated horror films ever made. More than four decades later, Carpenter's chilling tale of paranoia, isolation and survival remains as effective as ever.

Set within the frozen wastelands of Antarctica, the story follows a team of researchers who discover that an alien organism has infiltrated their remote station. The creature possesses the terrifying ability to perfectly imitate any living thing it encounters, leaving the team unable to trust one another as suspicion and fear begin to spread.

What follows is a masterclass in tension, atmosphere and practical filmmaking.

At a time when audiences are increasingly rediscovering practical effects, The Thing remains one of the gold standards of creature horror. Rob Bottin's groundbreaking effects work continues to astonish, creating some of the most memorable and disturbing imagery in genre cinema history. Combined with Carpenter's precise direction and Ennio Morricone's haunting score, the film has earned its reputation as a true horror masterpiece.

The new 4K restoration offers audiences the opportunity to experience the film as never before, with enhanced picture quality bringing new life to the frozen landscapes, intricate effects work and oppressive atmosphere that have captivated audiences for decades.

The screening is presented as part of Fright Night with Green Screen and will feature a special introduction from Emily Booth, one of the UK's most recognisable horror presenters and a familiar face to genre fans through her work across film, television and festival events.

While often remembered as one of the greatest science-fiction horror films ever made, The Thing continues to resonate because of the themes at its core. Questions of trust, identity and survival remain just as relevant today as they were in 1982, helping the film maintain its place as one of the most influential genre films ever produced.

Whether you are discovering The Thing for the first time or revisiting Carpenter's classic on the big screen, this special 4K presentation promises to be one of the horror cinema highlights of the year.
