This Means War director McG reveals Robert Downey Jr was his Lex Luthor

21 February 2012

Action comedy This Means War hits cinemas in the coming weeks and while director McG has been doing the rounds promoting the film and revealed that Iron Man hero Robert Downey Jr. was set to play the villainous Lex Luthor in his cancelled Superman film.

The Charlie's Angels director tells The Playlist that he had secured the Iron Man star's services ahead of his return to Hollywood "We had Robert Downey Jr locked up to be Lex Luthor, which I think would have been extraordinary, JJ wrote the script, and we got that to a really good place in the end, but I'm to blame for the film not happening."

McG's ill fated Superman film carried the subtitle of Flyby and had Scarlett Johansson as the favourite to play Lois Lane with Transformers franchise star Shia LaBeouf in line to play Jimmy Olsen.

Coincidentally Man of Steel star Henry Cavill was amongst the actors that screen tested for the lead role of Clark Kent aka Kal-El aka Superman.

This Means War stars Reese Witherspoon, Chris Pine, Tom Hardy, Til Schweiger, Angela Bassett, Rosemary Harris and Smallville's Supergirl Laura Vandervoort.
