Comedian Jim Norton Battles His Sex Addiction, Promotes His New Comedy Special, Talks about his Childhood and Weighs In On The Drama Surrounding Anthony Cumia’s Firing and the Role of Tension in Comedy

Los Angeles - This week on the Monday (April 27, 2015) episode of the top-ranked comedy podcast Alison Rosen Is Your New Best Friend, comedian Jim Norton (Opie with Jim Norton, Louie, Inside Amy Schumer) sits down with Alison Rosen to discuss his new comedy special, Contextually Inadequate (EPIX) and speaks, in typical candid fashion about his battle with severe sex addiction. He also opens up about the drama surrounding Anthony Cumia’s firing from the popular SiriusXM comedy program, Opie and Anthony.

Jim Norton is well known for talking unabashedly about, to put it simply, all the weird sex he has. He speaks of his sexual fetishes and ventures much in the way that others would speak about going to the grocery store.

He told Alison, “I had one girl one time, she had nice size 9 feet, she was a sexy girl. I’m, like, licking her feet, they had a really sexy scent to them, and she starts slapping my face with her foot and I looked at her face and I could tell she was being aggressive and she was, like, closing off my air. She was sealing my nose trying to suffocate me with her feet. It really turned me on that she was doing that, I loved her attitude about it. (0:04:39)”

Although Jim clearly doesn’t mind being so open about his deviant sex life, he admitted, “I'm sick of it being my identity. The only reason that's my identity is because that's what I do, it's not a persona I created. I’m literally always sexting. (0:07:58)"

Jim has kicked many addictions in his life: Drinking, drugs, and smoking, to name a few. He’s known nearly his entire life that he is a sex addict, but it wasn’t until very recently that he decided to fight this particular demon.

“I’m a week in, or so, of not doing anything sexually. I don’t know where it will go or how long it will last, but I wanted to address this because there’s no end game with this (0:06:19). I’ve had more than my share of pleasure and prostitutes, and anything you can imagine sexually that I wanted to do, I’ve done. And it’s still not enough. (0:06:49)”

One of Jim’s motivations in conquering his sex addiction is the hope it will lead him to be more productive in his career. He is working on getting multiple projects off the ground, including some animations of his radio characters, and a talk show.

In the meantime, Jim’s latest comedy special, Contextually Inadequate premiered Friday, April 24 on Epix and Jim is co-hosting the SiriusXM radio show Opie with Jim Norton.

Formerly known as Opie and Anthony, the long-running radio show ran into well-known controversy in July 2014 when host Anthony Cumia was fired after making a series of what Sirius XM referred to as “racially-charged and hate-filled” tweets.

Jim had been making regular guest appearances on Opie and Anthony for many years, so when Cumia was fired, SiriusXM decided Jim would take over as co-host.

Alison asked Jim what his feelings were about the tweets that got Anthony fired.

Jim responded, “I think Penn Jillette said it best when he said ‘He got assaulted and he chose the pen instead of the sword. He didn’t say a lot of things as smart as Anthony Cumia is. He was pissed off, and he got punched in the face by a woman. (0:35:59)”

SiriusXM had stated Anthony was fired because the tweets included threats of violence.

Jim said he could understand Cumia’s intense anger about the incident.

“He was like, ‘I hope she gets shot’. And I understand the emotion behind that. I mean, that sounds like a terrible thing, but if some woman punched me in the face and called me a ‘white mother fucker’ and the worst thing I said was ‘I hope a homeboy shoots her’, you know what? You can’t go to jail for that. (0:38:22)”

Jim also addressed the longstanding feud between Opie and Anthony and talked about similar dynamics in other comedic relationships he’s encountered over the years.
