Top 10 films at the 56th BFI London Film Festival

21 September 2012

As we count down the days until the 56th annual BFI London Film Festival, we have compiled a list of the ten films to look out for at this years event.

Running from October 10-21, tickets for each of these films (and many, many more) will go on sale to the general public this coming Monday 24 September, and to book tickets and for more information please visit The BFI...

10 - Great Expectations

This year's closing film - we revisit one of Charles Dicken's most acclaimed novels, as Mike Newell provides his own take on one of the most well-known pieces of English literature. Helena Bonham Carter, Ralph Fiennes and Jeremy Irvine all star.

9 - John Dies at the End

As with any film festival, there is an array of brilliant world cinema submissions, generally rather naturalistic and affecting in their approach. So it's always nice to take a break from destruction and heartbreak to see something that's just a little bit silly, and John Dies at the End - starring Paul Giamatti - is just that. Shame we know how it finishes though.

8 - Frankenweenie 3D

His wife may be the star of the closing film, but Tim Burton is opening this years event, revisiting a short movie he had made back in 1984. A film for all the family centred around a dog that is brought back to life by it's beloved owner, Frankenweenie is voiced by the likes of Winona Ryder and Christopher Lee.

7 - Quartet

Quartet is esteemed Hollywood star Dustin Hoffman's directorial debut, and he seems to have gone all British us on - with a cast consisting of Maggie Smith, Michael Gambon and Billy Connolly. Sounds rather fitting to see a film bearing a host of British acting royalty at an event held in the nation's capital. Looks good too.

6 - The Hunt

Right, so here's one of those heartbreaking world cinema pieces I was on about - but it looks terrific. Spawned from the mind of Dogme 95 co-founder Thomas Vinterberg who brought us the sensational Festen, The Hunt is all about a school teacher wrongly accused of child abuse. Mads Mikkelsen stars as the lead, in a role that earnt the Dane a best actor award at Cannes Film Festival earlier this year.

5 - Beasts of the Southern Wild

This may be Benh Zeitlin's début feature, but it looks like one of the bravest and most innovative pieces of the year - and one that has been on the end of much critical acclaim thus far, as we follow a six-year-old girl on a journey into the unknown...

4 - Rust and Bone

Despite having just missed out on an Oscar submission - with France putting Untouchable forward instead - Rust and Bone remains one of the highlights of this year's LFF, in what looks like a hugely emotive piece starring the ever wonderful Marion Cotillard.

3 - Sightseers

Last year it was Fright Fest that British director Ben Wheatley took by storm, and now with his follow up feature to Kill List, it's the LFF he is set to take over - in what is certainly one of the most anticipated films of the festival. It's all about a caravan holiday that has, well, gone rather wrong...

2 - Seven Psychopaths

With an all-star cast and coming from In Bruges director Martin McDonagh, Seven Psychopaths is the story of a group of oddball friends who steal a gangsters Shih Tzu. Starring Colin Farrell, Woody Harrelson and Christopher Walken, we could be in store for one of the comedies of the year with this one.

1 - Amour

Absolutely tragic and devastating, Amour ironically translates as love, and it's that very word we expect to using to describe this film once we've seen it. Winning the hugely prestigious Palme d'Or award at this years Cannes Film Festival, Amour comes from respected film maker Michael Haneke and is about a married couple in their 80's, one of whom suffers from a stroke. Tissues at the ready...
