TV is Still the Most Popular Way to Consume News with Trevor Mcdonald Voted Best Newsreader of All Time

17 June 2015

HALF OF BRITS CONSUME NEWS ONLINE, WITH JUST OVER A QUARTER ACCESSING NEWS STORIES VIA SOCIAL MEDIA

Today, a survey has revealed great news for broadcasters, with 85% of Brits consuming their news from the TV, compared to just over half (53%) who said they consume news online. This is particularly true of the over 55s, with more than 9 in 10 (92%) getting their news from the TV compared to 80% of 25-34 years olds.

When asked about who would make them turn on the news, almost 2 in 5 (36.5%) said that Trevor McDonald is the best newsreader of all time. Other popular newsreaders included Jon Snow, Reginald Bosenquat and Richard Baker. 1 in 10 (13%) of those in Wales named Huw Edwards as the best newsreader.

Of the 2,000 recipients surveyed to coincide with the release of The Newsroom Season 3 on Blu-ray and DVD, social media also proved a popular way to consume the news, with more than a quarter of Brits accessing news stories in this way (27.8%). Most popular among the young, 3 in 5 16-24 year olds (60%) used social media to consume the news (59.7%) compared to fewer than one in ten (9.8%) of over 55s. Women are more likely to get their news on social media, compared to 24.2% of men.

Colin Smith, Director of HBO Home Entertainment UK, commented: “These results show that TV is as popular as ever for those watching to access the news, despite the increasing popularity of online and social media. The public has a great affection for their favourite newsreaders, and this may be in part why they continue to switch on to their favourite news programmes”.

Interestingly, although 8 in 10 Brits (85%) said they watch the news to keep up with current affairs, 1 in 5 (20%) admitted they only watch the news to keep in the loop with family and friends.
