UNA Screenwriter David Harrower’s 9 DEATHS Snapped Up to be developed by Compact Pictures and Synchronicity Films

22 September 2016

Compact Pictures and Synchronicity Films has announced it will develop UNA screenwriter and Olivier-award winning playwright, David Harrower’s 9 DEATHS.

The film will be produced by award winning team Claire Mundell (His Bloody Project, Not Another Happy Ending, Crying With Laughter, Weekend) and John McKay (1745, We'll Take Manhattan) and is being developed with support from Creative Scotland.

Harrower is currently riding a wave of praise for the outstanding success of Una, which has screened to international acclaim at TIFF and Telluride. The writer’s plays are famed for their dark and controversial themes, and 9 Deaths is no different. A classic genre story, 9 Deaths tells of the quiet, conflicted middle son of a local crime family, who must choose between his freedom and leading his clan in an escalating gang war. The film will be told in a startling and fresh way: nine slices, wildly jumping in time, place, and point of view - the only rule being, in each slice, someone will die. How long does our hero have?

David Harrower, screenwriter said “It’s great to be working with John and Claire on this project. We have a fantastic story, peopled with complex, damaged characters and we hope we can create an electrifying, intense Scottish film.”

John McKay, producer of Compact said "It's truly exciting to be working with one of the UK's foremost dramatists just as he hits full stride in film writing.”

Claire Mundell producer of Synchronicity Films said “I am thrilled to be working with David on a new project in his movie career with this compelling and dark story of a crime family, trapped by their own terrifying and tragic destiny.”

This is the first time Mundell and McKay have worked together as producers, having previously worked successfully as a producer / director team on Not Another Happy Ending, the closing film of the Edinburgh International Film Festival 2013.

As recently announced, Mundell, and her production company Synchronicity, hold the television / film rights to Man Booker 2016 shortlisted novel His Bloody Project by Graeme Macrae Burnet, also in active development.
