Vertigo Releasing Announces Acquisition Of Philippe Falardeau’s MY NEW YORK YEAR + Sets UK & Ireland Release This May

25 February 2021

Vertigo Releasing is thrilled to announce the acquisition of MY NEW YORK YEAR (also known as My Salinger Year) for the UK and Ireland, with the film landing in cinemas on 21 May 2021.

Sigourney Weaver and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood ’s Margaret Qualley star in this coming-of-age story set in 1990s New York, directed by Philippe Falardeau. The film is based on the critically acclaimed book My Salinger Year by Joanna Rakoff, and had its world premiere at last year’s Berlin International Film Festival. It will have its UK premiere at this year’s Virgin Media Dublin International Film Festival.

MY NEW YORK YEAR is produced by Kim McCraw & Luc Dery (micro_scope), Ruth Coady & Susan Mullen (Parallel Films). Vertigo Releasing acquired the film from Memento Films, who are handling international sales.

Synopsis - New York in the 90s: After leaving graduate school to pursue her dream of becoming a writer, Joanna gets hired as an assistant to Margaret, the stoic and old-fashioned literary agent of J. D. Salinger. Fluctuating between poverty and glamour, she spends her days in a plush, wood-panelled office - where dictaphones and typewriters still reign and agents doze off after three-martini lunches - and her nights in a sink-less Brooklyn apartment with her socialist boyfriend.

Joanna’s main task is processing Salinger’s voluminous fan mail, but as she reads the heart-wrenching letters from around the world, she becomes reluctant to send the agency’s impersonal standard letter and impulsively begins personalizing the responses. The results are both humorous and moving, as Joanna, while using the great writer’s voice, begins to discover her own.
