HELLO TOMORROW Launched On Apple TV+ This Year: RETRO LOVE – Why 2023’S Top Movies Will Keep The Retro Revival Going

29 May 2023

There have been signs lately that movie fans will be treated to a selection of retro films that take us back to the 1970s and 1980s. With some big remakes coming up, it looks like 2023 will give us a chance to enjoy some old favourites in new ways.

How We Love Retro

Our love of retro can be seen in the latest TV shows as well as in movies, with Grease, Doctor Who, and Ally McBeal among the series set to return in 2023. Hello Tomorrow was released earlier in 2023 and took a different approach, with Billy Crudup starring in a retrofuturistic world which imagines a 1950s setting but with the type of advanced technology that didn’t exist then.

The retro theme is apparent when we enter a live casino online and look at the games offered there. For example, Funky Time from Evolution has a human presenter in a 1970s atmosphere where a DigiWheel is set in motion and can give out multipliers and bonuses to the player. Other games have a more modern setting while Lightning Roulette goes even further back in time with a 1920s-style art deco theme.

What New Movies Take Us Back in Time?

Ghostbusters is set to be one of the most interesting new releases of 2023. The original movie was released in 1984 and its incredible success led to several other movies in the franchise, although they largely failed to capture the excitement and the success of the first attempt. This year’s film doesn’t have a title as yet but the fact that it's a reboot and a few stars of the original are expected to reprise their original roles means it could have a retro feel.

The Exorcist: Believer is set for an October release and is a sequel to the 1973 movie that started the franchise and at least one more sequel is expected after this. With Ellen Burstyn returning in her role as Chris MacNeil, it’s yet to be seen whether the film’s director goes for a retro look or updates the franchise to a more modern visual style.

For 2024, there are rumours of a new Dirty Dancing project that doesn’t yet have a title. Starring Jennifer Grey, it’s said to be set a few years after the 1987 original took place, meaning that we can look forward to a 1990s vibe from it.

A Fall Guy movie is also set for a 2024 release. Based on the 1980s series about a stuntman played by Lee Majors, it brings Ryan Gosling into the lead role with Emily Blunt and Aaron Taylor-Johnson also involved. Plot details are scarce but it’s described as updating the original, so it’s not clear to date whether it’s going to be set in the 1980s or in current times.

Our love for all things retro means that we should continue to see new movies that are either based on classics from the past or else take us into a carefully crafted retro world. Either way, it’s a trend that we can expect to see a lot more of in the next couple of years and beyond.
