Great news for X-Men fans - Bryan Singer is returning to direct another movie about the superhero mutants.

The Usual Suspects director helmed the first two X-Men movies before leaving the franchise to work on Superman Returns. X-Men: The Last Stand was then directed by Brett Ratner.

However, Singer has revealed that he is to direct X-Men: First Class - which charts the early days of Professor Xavier's mutant academy.

He said, "I just yesterday signed a deal to do an X-Men: First Class origins picture, which is kind of cool. I'm very excited."

Bryan Singer has given his strongest hint yet that he wants to make another X-Men movie.

The director helmed the first two X-men movies but pulled out of the third one to do Superman Returns instead.

But after the critical mauling of X-Men: The Last Stand, Singer has revealed he's considering heading back to the franchise.

He said, "I'm still looking to possibly return to the X-Men franchise. I've been talking to Fox about it. I love Hugh Jackman. I love the cast."

If Singer does go ahead with another X-Men movie, it looks likely that his involvement with the Superman franchise will have ended following the muted critical reaction for Superman Returns.
