2012 big in China
30 December 2009
Disaster epic 2012 has become the biggest grossing film in China's history.
The thriller, which starred John Cusack, has caused a splash since its release on December 23 and has now taken over £42 million.
It has overtaken the previous record set by Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen - with Jackie Chan's The Founding of a Republic the third most successful movie in China.
Titanic held the record for years before Transformers eclipsed it.
The success of 2012 and Transformers has increased pressure on the Chinese government to ease its annual quota of 20 foreign blockbusters, reports The Press Association.
