Black Sea – In Cinemas Friday – Iconic Captains Feature

03 December 2014

Black Sea centres on a rogue submarine captain (Jude Law) who, after being laid off from a salvage company, pulls together a misfit crew to go after a sunken treasure rumoured to be lost in the depths of the Black Sea. As greed and desperation take control on board their claustrophobic vessel, the increasing uncertainty of the mission causes the men to turn on each other to fight for their own survival.

With the release of Black Sea this Friday, in which Jude Law plays a badass Scottish submarine captain on a mission to find hidden Nazi treasure at the bottom of the ocean, we thought it was time to give recognition to all the awesome captains brought to us by the movies.

From space captains, to pirates, to Disney baddies, we think they are all pretty cool …. Here’s our (in comprehensive) list of cracking captains...

Capt. Ahab: Moby Dick (1956)

One of the greatest captains in the history of literature was captured on screen by the flawless Gregory Peck. Captain of the ship Pequod and out to seek revenge on the legendary sperm whale, Moby Dick for taking his leg and destroying his boat, Peck’s portrayal of Ahab’s obsession with hunting down the whale is perfection.

Capt. Jack Sparrow: Pirate of the Caribbean (2003-2011)

The strangely attractive scoundrel Jack Sparrow is a drunk, a womaniser and a double-crosser, yet he still manages to save the day and be the loveable rogue who insists captain’s the Black Pearl. Jonny Depp plays the role brilliantly, bringing bags of humour to the film with his portrayal of this bizarre yet totally loveable scallywag who can get himself out of the stickiest of situations.

Capt. John H. Miller: Saving Private Ryan (1998)

Tom Hanks plays the captain of a squad of men who set out to find the last remaining brother of four servicemen protecting and leading them through thick and thin. This intensely good film reaches its climax when Captain Miller exhales his last motivational and iconic words; ‘James ... earn this. Earn it.’ Only such a phenomenal captain would die for a comrade and bring us all to tears.

Capt. Steve Rogers: Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)

When a feeble American is rejected from the army in WWII due to various health and physical problems and goes on to become one of the coolest super heroes of all time, you know it’s going to be an inspirational one. From a weakling to an icon with super powers and some serious moves- Chris Evans gives scrawny teenage boys all over the world a hero to aspire to.

Capt. Jean-Luc Picard: Star Trek: First Contact (1996)

First Contact is one of the best Star Trek’s essentially for the way in which Patrick Stewart goes bonkers and fires a tommy gun at Borg drones, before letting loose an awe-inspiring monologue on the cyborgs. When eradicating the finest advance-guard that the Borg has to offer, it’s to be expected that you might go a little crazy. Despite this he maintains an impressive record as a ruthless killer with some serious skills and when it comes to cinema’s space captains, it doesn’t get any better than Jean-Luc.

Capt. Steve Zissou: The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou (2004)

Bill Murray and Wes Anderson bring us a brilliant captain in the form of Steve Zissou the bizarre oceanographer out to take revenge on the shark that ate his best friend. The coolest of captains and one of the most amusing, Steve Zissou is an eccentric and is both a parody of and tribute to a real life French diving pioneer.

Capt. Marko Ramius: The Hunt For Red October (1990)

Sean Connery is the awesome defecting captain and commanding officer of the Red October, an undetectable Soviet submarine which is feared to be planning an attack on the U.S. Ramius it someone to be taken seriously as he starts off by murdering his political adviser, burning his orders, and steering his submarine towards American waters, hoping to defect. This is a captain not to be messed with!

(Capt.) Han Solo: Star Wars (1977-1983)

George Lucas described Han Solo as ‘a loner who realizes the importance of being part of a group and helping for the common good’. We think he’s a fantastic captain of the Millennium Falcon, big-dog of the galactic governments and an all-round good bloke as he saves Luke Skywalker and pretty much the entire universe.

Capt. Hook: Hook (1991)

The best portrayal of the Disney baddy to date, Dustin Hoffman’s Hook is someone you both hate but also really love. He’s as cool as he is camp, but also formidable and manipulative as he turns Robin Williams’ son against him.

Capt. Richard Phillips: Captain Phillips (2013)

Once again Tom Hanks smashes it out of the park with his portrayal of Captain Richard Phillips, who was hijacked by Somali pirates and managed to remain calm and collected whilst telling the crew to hide in the engine room and allowing himself to be captured. One of the most epically selfless captains, he puts his life on the line and saves the lives of his crew- what a hero!

Catch Jude Law as the rogue submarine captain who, after being laid off from a salvage company, pulls together a misfit crew to go after a sunken treasure rumoured to be lost in the depths of the Black Sea until greed and desperation take control on board their claustrophobic vessel and the increasing uncertainty of the mission causes the men to turn on each other to fight for their own survival.
