Jaden and Will Smith – Who’s a Bigger Star Now Dad?

16 July 2010

Jaden Smith, 12, appears alongside legend Jackie Chan in the remake of The Karate Kid. Mum, Jada Pinkett Smith is sure that Jaden has the advantage that his parents have been in the business for a long time, and for him it's more about learning; "Jaden grew up in the industry and understands it well".

Jaden hasn't exactly had a radical ilfe change of lifestyle, sure there's more of a shift of focus on him but most child stars are broken by the pressures of suddenly being the bread winner for the whole family. Will Smith said he is always trying to look after his needs, when asking Jaden, he replied, "I think you should let me stay up longer".

The Karate Kid is a remake of the 1984 original, and was shot entirely in China. On his time in China, Jaden said that he had hamburgers all the time, he did enjoy it but struggled with the language, as nobody spoke English.

Jaden Smith plays an American boy who moves with his mum to China, where he takes on a bully under the guidance of an unassuming martial-arts master (Jackie Chan).

With his first lead role, 11-year-old Smith had a US opening weekend that stacked up well against the track record of his superstar dad, Will Smith, who has had only two debuts bigger than The Karate Kid ("I Am Legend" at $77.2 million and "Hancock" at $62.6 million). Will Smith and wife Jada Pinkett Smith are producers on The Karate Kid.

"It's like, ‘Who's the biggest star now, dad?'"

The Karate Kid is released in the UK on 28 July.
