Alfonso Cuaron honoured at 66th Directors Guild Awards for Gravity

27 January 2014

With Gravity back in IMAX its only fitting that Alfonso Cuaron has been honoured at the 66th Directors Guild Awards by taking home the top prize at the weekend ceremony.

Cuaron took home the Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film for his hit film Gravity that stars Sandra Bullock and George Clooney.

Speaking of the honour, Cuaron said "We saw all these photographs of Earth from space, and it's absolutely beautiful; hues of greens and blues.

Everything seems so organic [from space]. Those silly lines and boundaries we put on political maps, you can't see that from space.

It's a bizarre experiment of nature, that is the human experience. And it's what we as directors try to sort out as filmmakers."

Gravity was originally released in October and took the BFI London Film Festival by storm, since the initial release both he and Bullock have received critical recognition.

The acclaimed filmmaker also took home the Best Director award at the 2014 Golden Globes and an Oscar could be in his future for Best Director.

Gravity is also up for Best Picture and Bullock is up for Best Actress.

Who will win will be announced when the 86th Academy Awards airs on ABC March 2 at 7pm ET.
