Award Winning Musical + Iconic Witches + Mark Curry Returns As The Wizard: 5 Reasons To See Wicked This Halloween Season!

19 October 2022

There’s a chill in the air, the nights are getting longer, and pumpkins are returning to supermarket displays around the country, which can only mean Halloween is just around the corner. With everyone looking for the best way to get into a little bit of spooky spirit, we recommend planning a trip to every witch and wizard’s favourite West End destination – the Apollo Victoria Theatre, home of the award winning musical Wicked! Here are five reasons why the show is just the ticket this Halloween season:

  • Elphaba and Glinda – the most iconic witches in popular culture!

At its core, Halloween is a celebration of the things that haunt us – ghouls and ghosts, spectres and spirits, wizards and witches, and there is perhaps no more iconic sorcerer than the Wicked Witch of the West. From her pointed hat to her flying broom, Elphaba is an embodiment of all things witchy, and in Wicked, you can experience the dramatic story behind her legend. Based on the novel by Gregory Maguire, Wicked imagines a beguiling backstory and future possibilities to the lives of L. Frank Baum’s beloved characters from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz – revealing the decisions and events that shape the destinies of two unlikely university friends on their journey to becoming Glinda The Good and the Wicked Witch of the West!

  • It’s a fantastic musical!

Whilst you’re being enchanted by Wicked’s witches, you’ll be tapping your toes to a series of spellbinding songs. The show’s music and lyrics were written by multi-Oscar, Golden Globe, and Grammy winning composer Stephen Schwartz, who also penned iconic tunes for films like Pocahontas and The Prince of Egypt. With musical numbers that’ll make you want to sing along in your seats, this is a show you’ll have stuck in your head for weeks!

  • Mark Curry’s return as The Wizard!

As Halloween returns, so too does a familiar face – October 18th saw the triumphant return of actor, broadcaster, and former Blue Peter presenter Mark Curry to the role of The Wizard after five years away from the production. Having previously dazzled audiences as part of Wicked London’s 10th Anniversary cast, this Halloween you can look forward to one of the great figures in the show’s history reprising his iconic role!

  • It’s award winning, and beloved by millions of fans!

Since beginning its run in London 16 years ago, Wicked has welcomed over 11 million fans through the doors of the Apollo Victoria Theatre, and the show has been the recipient of over 100 awards and honours, including three Tony Awards, two Olivier Awards, and a Grammy. Having received so much love from audiences the world over, there is no doubt that a trip to see Wicked will be a thrilling experience you won’t soon forget!

  • The show’s book was written by the creator of My So-Called Life!

The songs get stuck in your head, the characters are iconic, and the performances are winning – but Wicked truly would not work if it wasn’t so well written. Fortunately, the show’s book was co-written by Winnie Holzman, the Emmy-nominated creator of the cult classic 90’s teen comedy My So-Called Life. Holzman’s writing truly captures the nuances and heightened emotions of growing up as a young woman, making her the perfect person to tell Elphaba and Glinda’s story – one which promises to be fun and moving for children and grown-ups alike!

There you have it – five reasons why seeing Wicked is one of the best things you can do this Halloween season. All that remains is for you to don your witch hats, dig out your broomsticks, and make haste towards the Apollo Victoria Theatre in London for a magical musical experience like no other!
