29 April 2015

IMAX Corporation (NYSE: IMAX) today confirmed that Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron continues to break box office records internationally, as it blasted into UK theatres with a record setting $2.2 million (£1.4 million) over 32 screens. This figures means Avengers: Age of Ultron is the Company’s highest-ever UK opening, helping also to make the film the biggest debut so far for 2015.

Internationally IMAX® theatres also set an equally impressive record-breaking opener, with $10.6 million on 175 screens, the Company’s highest-ever non-China overseas debut. On a per-screen basis internationally, the film also landed among the largest overseas launches for IMAX, averaging a stellar $61,000 per screen.

Individual market highlights in addition to the UK include the Vue’s Copenhagen IMAX location – the first of several IMAX DMR® sites scheduled to open in Scandinavia – which grossed $170,000 during its opening weekend. Other noteworthy territories include Brazil, Hong Kong, and South Korea.

“We’d like to congratulate our longtime partners at Disney and Marvel on this phenomenal overseas opening and for creating an awe-inspiring and resilient franchise that is perfectly suited for The IMAX Experience,” said Greg Foster, Senior Executive Vice President, IMAX Corp. and CEO of IMAX Entertainment.

“The international IMAX opening for Avengers: Age of Ultron is record-setting and especially notable if you look at our per screen averages on a local currency basis. With major overseas territories like China and Japan yet to come, as well as the domestic market opening this weekend, we’re excited to continue to build upon the tradition of quality entertainment that the Marvel/IMAX connection carries with audiences worldwide.”
