Peter Sohn presents The Good Dinosaur at Special Disney•Pixar presentation

16 June 2015

Yesterday Disney•Pixar unveiled The Good Dinosaur at a special preview hosted by Director Peter Sohn who confirmed the cast of Raymond Ochoa as Arlo, Jeffrey Wright as his Father, Frances McDormand as his Mother, Jack Bright as Arlo’s Human companion Spot, Steve Zahn as Thunderclap (a Pterodactyl with Vulture like sensibilities) and Sam Elliott, Anna Paquin and A.J. Buckley as Butch, Ramsey and Nash a family of Tyrannosaurus Rex’s.

Beginning the Presentation by sharing his memories working at Pixar, with a slideshow of amusing pictures, telling us about his start at Pixar and moving from the Art Department to the Story Department, working on Finding Nemo and meeting Andrew Stanton.

He also worked on The Incredibles with Brad Bird years later, working in the Art Department then the Story Department, and shared his reaction to being thrown in at the deep end to put together the third act to The Incredibles.

Getting to the main event of the Presentation, Peter kicked things off by showing a short clip from the Teaser Trailer for The Good Dinosaur and explained that the story started with the question; ‘What If the Meteor didn’t wipe out the Dinosaurs?’ and went on to discuss that the environment for the film will be groundbreaking, and the visuals that he showed are stunning and real do attest to that.

During the presentation, we were treated to never before seen Animation tests as well as a few clips that really showcase the emotional core of the story as well as the dangers that Arlo faces on his journey.

Peter also explained that the music composed by Mychael Danna will play a huge part to the story and as well as John Lasseter overseeing the production of The Good Dinosaur, Denise Ream has been a huge support all the way through Production.

The Good Dinosaur is an incredible and emotional story from Disney•Pixar, one of self discovery and friendship, overcoming fears and ultimately love and arrives in UK Cinema on December 4 this year!

When asked if there were any Disney films that had inspired the making of The Good Dinosaur, Peter Sohn said “It’s a lot of movies, it’s movie love, Black Stallion, there is a definite vibe of taking our time with the immersive nature of the film, Now-a—days films are cut so fat that we are trying to slow it down.
What I love about Black Stallion and other Disney movies like that is there are so few characters.”

Talking about the scope of the World created for the film, he said “Early on with this film, Dinosaur movies it’s always Dinosaur against Dinosaur and the climax is what the bigger Dinosaur can bring. With our movie we tried to bing obstacles for the Dinosaur and for Arlo could represent something internal as well as external, trying to find an emotion to it, and Mother Nature became that thing for us.

With Arlo’s design it was always about trying to find a charming look, we wanted something there that was familiar but different at the same time.”

The Good Dinosaur opens in UK Cinemas on December 4 in Disney 3D and features the voice talents of Raymond Ochoa, Jeffrey Wright, Steve Zahn, A.J. Buckley Anna Paquin, Sam Elliott, Frances McDormand, Marcus Scribner and Jack Bright.
