Selma actor David Oyelowo backs Ava DuVernay for Marvel Cinematic Universe

06 June 2015

Whilst he is all for his Selma director Ava DuVernay joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Golden Globe and Independent Spirit Award nominee David Oyelowo isn’t eager to join a major superhero franchise, in spite of their immense popularity.

Reports emerged last month that DuVernay is in contention to direct Marvel's Black Panther or female-centric Captain Marvel.

Talking to The Wrap, the Selma and Interstellar sought after actor said “The thing about Ava is everything she touches she elevates. She bakes into it who she is.

So, if Marvel is as smart and as brave to go on that journey with Ava, I'm personally the first in line to see what she does with that."

However, we won’t see him suit up any time soon, Oyelowo added “For me personally, I tread with caution around the notion of those kinds of characters, depending on which one of them you're playing, there's always a danger you're going to get so identified with this larger-than-life character, that it could become tougher for audiences to believe you in other roles."

Oyelowo is no stranger to massive franchises, after voicing the villainous Kallus in Disney XD's animated series Star Wars Rebels.

Oyelowo is currently filming Mira Nair’s Queen of Katwe and has Cynthia Mort’s Nina and Maris Curran’s Five Nights in Maine in post production and Jerry Jameson’s Captive ready for release.
