"your classic boy meets girl tale with a Disney•Pixar twist"

For as long as I can remember and in my 20 years of writing for The Fan Carpet, I have always loved Animation, I’ve also always loved Rom-Com’s so when the opportunity came up to see the new Disney•Pixar offering Elemental, I jumped at the chance.

The reasons above would’ve been enough to get me in the Cinema to see this, but when I found out it was directed by Peter Sohn; the creative behind The Good Dinosaur which was incredibly creative, I couldn’t wait and I wasn’t disappointed.

Elemental is fantastic, it is so inventive and what I love about this film is that there isn’t a villain of the piece, everything that happens seems to just be a slice of life, which is more relatable as a narrative in my opinion. The other thing I love is that the voices in the film are relative unknowns, so you aren’t distracted wondering where you have heard them before, with the exception of Wendi McLendon-Covey as Gale, she's fantastic in everything she's in and a very gifted performer.

So the story is your classic boy meets girl tale that has been utilised so many times, in so many films but with the Disney•Pixar twist, using Elements to tell the story, in a similar vein to Inside Out. There are some heavier undertones that we have come to expect from Disney•Pixar, most notably segregation and maybe that was more of a focal point in earlier versions of the film, but what we have is a beautiful story, beautifully realised with gorgeous animation that can go with the greats as a great entry into the Disney•Pixar canon.

The lead voices of Leah Lewis and Mamoudou Athie as Ember and Wade respectively bring the characters to life wonderfully, their timing is amazing and not being familiar with their work, made it all the easier to focus in on the characters they are bringing to life, it would be a disservice to the film to be thinking about their other work and ignoring what they bring to Elemental.

Once again, Peter Sohn and his creative team have nailed it, and I can’t wait to see what he and his team does next. More Elemental? There are rumours, but I'd certainly like to see what else in this world that could be explored.
