Moss & Freud Premiere: Ellie Bamber, Sir Derek Jacobi and James Lucas Discuss Art, Vulnerability and the Woman Behind the Icon

29 May 2026

The Fan Carpet in partnership with Red Carpet News TV were in attendance on the red carpet for the premiere of Moss & Freud, where stars Ellie Bamber and Sir Derek Jacobi joined director James Lucas to discuss the film’s exploration of one of the most fascinating artistic relationships of the modern era.

Rather than presenting a conventional cradle-to-grave biography of fashion icon Kate Moss, Moss & Freud focuses on a transformative chapter in her life during her relationship with celebrated artist Lucian Freud. For director James Lucas, that intimate approach was central to the film’s identity.

“I never felt a need to make a greatest hits album,” Lucas explained. “I thought it would be more interesting to tell a film based around transformation, finding out what has meaning in one’s life and looking at what’s important.”

Taking on the role of Kate Moss is Ellie Bamber, who described being drawn to the story’s exploration of creativity, identity and personal growth.

“I see Kate in this film as a coming-of-age story,” Bamber said. “It’s her journey into motherhood and how a young woman tackles being in a creative world and all the things that are thrown at you during that time.”

The actress also spoke warmly about spending time with the real Kate Moss during production, revealing that one of the biggest surprises was discovering her gift for storytelling.

“She’s an incredible orator,” Bamber explained. “The way that she tells stories is so captivating. There was a day on set where everyone was spilling into my dressing room because Kate was telling such beautiful stories.”

Lucas was full of praise for Bamber’s portrayal, noting that her connection to the role extended far beyond a physical resemblance.

“There were times I was watching the monitor and couldn’t really distinguish whether it was Kate or Ellie,” he said. “She understood the stakes, understood the role she was taking on and threw herself into it completely.”

Opposite Bamber is one of Britain’s most celebrated actors, Sir Derek Jacobi, who takes on the role of Lucian Freud. Jacobi reflected on his acting philosophy, explaining that every character, no matter how famous, must first be approached as a human being.

“Whatever character you’re playing, you must treat them as ordinary,” Jacobi said. “A man in a situation, given problems with which he deals.”

The legendary actor also spoke affectionately about his experience working alongside Bamber, describing the trust and friendship that developed between them throughout production.

“We trusted each other, liked each other and we giggled,” Jacobi laughed. “Actors have to giggle. If they don’t giggle, they aren’t actors.”

Lucas admitted that having Jacobi lead the film brought an additional layer of authenticity and gravitas to the project.

“He’s a god to me,” the director said. “I don’t think there was another actor who could have taken on the role of Lucian Freud in such a way and given it so much resonance and authenticity.”

The film’s visual style also plays a key role in recreating late-1990s and early-2000s London, with Lucas drawing inspiration from the era’s art, fashion and music culture.

Referencing Blur’s iconic “Beetlebum” music video among his influences, Lucas explained that recreating the look and feel of the period was essential to transporting audiences back to the final years of Cool Britannia.

Ultimately, the cast and filmmakers hope audiences come away with a deeper understanding of two cultural icons whose lives intersected in unexpected ways.

“I hope people take a peek behind the curtain,” Lucas said, “and understand what made these two cultural titans tick.”

With remarkable performances from Ellie Bamber and Sir Derek Jacobi, Moss & Freud promises to be far more than a biopic. It is an intimate study of creativity, vulnerability and the human connections that shape art itself.
