"as the film says, legends never die"

This is a particularly hard review to write. Not only am I a fan of Jason David Frank, but I met the man and spent meaningful time with him in 2019 at MCM Comic Con. So reviewing his final offering was always going to be tough, but I wanted to watch it — and so I did.

Legend of the White Dragon follows Erik Reed (Frank), a former hero turned fugitive following a devastating battle that destroyed part of Virtuo City and left more than 1,200 people dead.

For fans of Power Rangers, this is much grittier than the 1990s show Frank is known for. And no, this is not secretly a White Ranger story where Erik is eventually revealed to be Tommy Oliver. Legend of the White Dragon has its own mythology and lore and should be allowed to stand on its own merits.

The action is excellent, the story is excellent, and knowing that there is potentially more story to tell is tough because Frank is no longer with us. If they did continue, the cleanest way forward would perhaps be a passing of the torch, because I don’t think recasting Erik Reed would work — and I don’t think Bat in the Sun would want to do that either.

The cast is excellent, with some familiar faces from the legacy of Power Rangers, while David Ramsey is a welcome addition as someone I’ve been a fan of since Arrow. It was also nice to see Michael Madsen back on screen. He passed away in 2025, making this another of his final roles.

All in all, Legend of the White Dragon is excellent and has a lot of potential as a franchise. But with its lead no longer with us, any continuation would have to tread carefully, much like Marvel did following the untimely passing of Chadwick Boseman.

As the film says, legends never die.

Let’s hope there is more to come from Legend of the White Dragon. Maybe that future could even be a comic book.
