"could've been a half decent tribute"

Stanley Kubrick's The Shining starring Jack Nicholson is a cult classic and one of the most talked about movies of all time. Therefore given the recent inclination towards documentary features, it seems only right that there is one made about the film, and Rodney Ascher has taken on the honours.

While the premise is interesting - where a series of analysts and theorists dissect The Shining, I think they go a tad too far when it comes to the conspiracy theories - most notably the alledged faking of the historic Moon landing. There is no denying that Kubrick was a great man, but it seems to deviate away from his actual work, seeming to make a mockery out of his legacy. Although in fairness to the film maker, they aren't the thoughts of Ascher as such, but of those analysing.

Similarly I thought the cut away scenes of Tom Cruise acting to the voice overs were very out of place. I can appreciate why he has been included, having starred in Kubrick's final film; Eyes Wide Shut, but honestly it doesn't do the documentary any favours.

Neither, for the record, did its runtime, as it is simply too long. If they cut the Moon landing conspiracy theory stuff to a minimum, this could've been a half decent tribute to a great man.
