There’s always been a fascination with robots, AI, and automated systems learning to feel and discover love. Countless films explore this theme, with Her and Bicentennial Man being notable examples. DreamWorks’ latest animated feature, The Wild Robot, delves into the journey of an all-purpose robot stranded on a wild island, learning to interact with and help the local wildlife.

Directed by Chris Sanders, the film follows Rozzum unit 7134, a robot accidentally abandoned on an island after a Universal Dynamics cargo ship is caught in a typhoon.

Activated by curious animals poking at it, Roz finds itself purposeless and in search of tasks to fulfil its programming. However, communicating with animals isn’t part of its code, so Roz reprograms itself through observations as it gradually acquires the skills to understand the island’s wildlife.

As Roz learns to navigate her new environment, she quickly discovers that finding a way to be helpful isn’t as simple as it seems.

Initially, the animals distrust her, and after accidentally destroying a goose’s nest while escaping a bear, Roz learns her first lesson about nature: there’s always a predator lurking nearby. In her attempt to protect the only surviving egg from a Fox, Roz inadvertently becomes the first object the little Gosling imprints on.

Guided by a family of Opossums and Fink, the very Fox that threatened the egg, Roz finds a new purpose: helping the little Gosling – Brightbill, survive and learn to swim and fly before autumn arrives.

The Wild Robot is one of those animated films that warms the heart. While designed to entertain children, it also imparts a valuable lesson about accepting differences, kindness, and the importance of helping one another in times of need.

DreamWorks has already proven its storytelling prowess with How to Train Your Dragon, showcasing their ability to weave humour and heartfelt moments together. The Wild Robot stands as another remarkable example of creative storytelling that imparts important lessons to both young and adult audiences alike.

The film strikes a wonderful balance between clever jokes filled with double meanings and darker humour, ensuring it resonates with older viewers while remaining accessible to younger ones.

What truly makes The Wild Robot shine are its poignant scenes that highlight the significance of respecting one another, embracing our differences, and relying on each other during difficult times. By juxtaposing technology and nature, the film creates an emotional and entertaining experience that captivates audiences of all ages.

With the voices of talented actors like Lupita Nyong’o, Pedro Pascal, Kit Connor, Bill Nighy, Stephanie Hsu, Mark Hamill, Catherine O’Hara, Matt Berry and Ving Rhames, The Wild Robot transports you to a world where anything is possible—a world where love can truly conquer all, even changing a robot’s programming.
