British character actor who appeared in many major films, notably in several Shakespearean ones. He was born in Germany.

During WWII he was a junior radio announcer, reporting the news for the BBC. But he wanted to get back into acting, with his big break playing Horatio in Olivier’s Hamlet. He was known for combing his hair over his ears, like wings.

After Hamlet came Catesby in Olivier’s film of Richard III, and Paris in Romeo and Juliet (1954), starring Laurence Harvey and Susan Shentall. He also had a bit role in The Guns of Navarone, and supporting roles in Quo Vadis (1951) and Ivanhoe (1952).
