SYNOPSIS
Financed by public subscription, Renoir’s epic of the French Revolution featured his brother Pierre as Louis XVIII at one end of the social spectrum, while the main emphasis was on a group of ordinary men-turned-revolutionaries making their way from Marseilles to Paris. Sadly, the film was in fact the last expression of such comradely sentiment, as the Popular Front was already losing its hold.
