SYNOPSIS
WHISKEY DIXIE AND THE BIG WET COUNTRY. The voluptuous Whiskey Williams is a talented country singer sporting a collection of songs about her obsessions with masturbation, sex, drinking, smoking pot, and speeding. Alarmed at the prospect of never playing at “The Opry” and leaving ‘no legacy’, Whiskey ponders capitalising on her recent indecency arrest to gain publicity.
Meanwhile, sparks fly when her local tavern is inherited by established musician Dick Princess (played by John Bruner). But what will their hot liaison mean for Whiskey’s on-again, off-again relationship with sweet local dork Paul (played by newcomer Mac Kimmerle)?
Beneath the film’s excess are powerful messages around agency and accountability. The film hints at the importance of Roe V Wade and women finding fulfilment outside traditional roles without being overly preachy about it. Tracks like “Grab Life by the Pussy” parallels real-life events and the impact of influential figures on societal actions.
A seasoned musician and performer, Richards got her creative start in the 90s alternative scene in Portland, Oregon. She originally penned “Whiskey Dixie and the Big Wet Country” at a writer’s retreat in 2017 in the wake of her divorce, initially as a stage play. She went on to do 20 sold out performances in 2018, directed by Serah Pope. Figuring out how to scale the play, she pitched the idea of turning it into a feature film to executive producer Ryan Bell, whom she met on a sailboat in the Caribbean. Ryan quickly gave her the green light.
An award-winning songwriter, singer, composer, producer, playwright, screenwriter, and actress, Richards was born into a legacy of musical storytelling. Her grandfather, Rusty Richards, was a member of the legendary Western group, The Sons of the Pioneers. Since starting her journey, Amanda has released nine albums and received six first-round Grammy nominations as a country singer and composer. She has spent nearly two decades performing with her Americana ensemble, The Good Long Whiles, who penned the film’s soundtrack, building a devoted following in the Pacific Northwest.
Whiskey Dixie Productions was born out of necessity and a little bit of naivety. When Amanda set out to make her debut feature, she didn’t have a production company, so she built one around the film itself. That scrappy, figure-it-out spirit turned out to be exactly the right foundation. Whiskey Dixie Productions is now being acquired by The Strange, Richards’ creative home for the unconventional, the unexpected, and the unapologetically weird. If it came out of her head, it lives there.
