"both performances hit some highs and some lows, overall they bring to the screen a honest and lovely portrait of two people falling in love"

How many times do we find ourselves looking through an endless catalogue of romcoms to find the one that will hit all the sweet spots? Well, look no more.

Adapted from Sophie Kinsella’s homonymous novel, Can You Keep a Secret?, the film mixes together all the best ingredients of a classic quirky romantic comedy to take your mind away from all your troubles.

Set in Kinsella’s beloved New York city, Can You Keep a Secret? is the classic girl meets boy story. However, rather than being a meet cute, Emma Corrigan (Alexandra Daddario) finds herself spilling all her dirty, embarrassing, little secrets to a stranger on a plane while she believes they are both about to die from heavy turbulence.

Little does she know that the stranger on the plane is in fact her boss, Jack Harper (Tyler Hoechlin). The two of them promise each other to keep their encounter a secret and, while Emma finds the situation embarrassing, Jack is drawn to her quirkiness and girl next door attitude. Their relationship starts on a high, but Emma slowly discovers that while Jack knows every little thing about her, she doesn’t know anything about him.

As far as romantic comedies goes, Can You Keep a Secret? has all the ingredients for a feel good movie to watch on a night in. Although the film feels rushed, with the love story picking up quite immediately, some holes in the plot left unattended and some character development left behind, these imperfections help with the overall flow of the movie, making it dynamic, short and sweet.

The cast ensemble, made up of a mix of famous and not so famous actors, work together easily. Alexandra Daddario and Tyler Hoechlin have the responsibility to make Emma and Jack’s love story believable. Their chemistry is quite nice and it easily sells the romance to the audience, both performances hit some highs and some lows, overall they bring to the screen a honest and lovely portrait of two people falling in love.

Not surprising at all is how Laverne Cox always steals the show whenever she appears on screen. Although she appears briefly, her character both delivers some comic relief as well has heartfelt moments.

Much like her sister film Confessions of a Shopaholic, Can You Keep a Secret? is the classic feel good romcom that will make you laugh and at the same time wish for a happy ending.  During such difficult times, this is a good movie to switch off for an hour and a half to have a laugh.
