"a touching film with a humorous edge on aspects of society hardly ever seen in cinema today"
Last Chance Harvey is a romantic comedy with a twist. The lead stars; Emma Thompson and Dustin Hoffman are not the first names that would come to mind for most of us when it comes to this genre but fortunately this pays off. The film manages to steer away from the generic romantic comedies we're all used to and is raw and not always comfortable to watch.
Dustin Hoffman plays Harvey- a jingle writer from New York, who seems to have lost his touch and is facing redundancy in the near future. His daughter's wedding in the UK brings him to London where he crosses paths with Emma Thompson's character Kate until they finally meet in an airport restaurant. Hopkins, the director then gently guides us through the film with subtle elegance and a clever but restrained underlying element of comedy.
Last Chance Harvey is a touching film with a humorous edge on aspects of society hardly ever seen in cinema today. From redundancy to finding love over 40 to divorce Last Chance Harvey braved the subject. Emma Thompson and Dustin Hoffman along with other cast members made sure it was an engaging two hours of film, even though the subjects the film revolves around can make it uncomfortable to watch. The difficult chemistry between the lead characters- meant as a member of the audience I was always unsure of what would happen next and if the characters would take the risk you know they should.
Beautifully shot, well written and superbly acted Last Chance Harvey is a raw cinematic piece that has taken a risk- fortunately this has paid off.
