"If you’re looking for a film that’s earnest and with another optimistic and entertaining story for your whole family to enjoy then go see this"

Back in 2016 the original “Sing” was released, at the time it wasn’t as well publicised as some of the other blockbusters of the same year, yet it made a great impact with an optimistic plot and many family feel-good moments to accompany it, and let's not forget some great musical turns (including Taron Egerton’s great cover of “I’m Still Standing” which likely helped him get his roll as Elton John in Rocketman).

It's been 6 years since then and with the ongoing global situation I can’t think of a better family film to get families back into the cinema.

The cast is equally as impressive as its predecessor with Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Scarlett Johansson and Taron Egerton reprising their roles from the original. There’s also two notable new additions in the form of Halsey (playing Porsha) and Bono (playing Clay Calloway) to add even more star power to an already busy cast. Sadly we don’t have Seth MacFarlane’s crooning this time, but maybe only myself was a fan of that.

The plot this year centres on Buster attempting to get his troupe noticed by a talent scout, after being told they aren’t good enough they set off for the big city (which looks suspiciously like Las Vegas) to go straight to the top and audition. What follows is them having to put on an extravagant if elaborate musical and Buster having to track down the elusive shut in Clay Calloway so that they have some hope of making the show successful.

It’s not going to break any new ground and we’ve similar before but as expected Sing 2 delivers and is a fun watch for the whole family. As always there’s an eclectic mix of songs that have been chosen for the soundtrack, personal highlights for myself were “Heads Will Roll”, “Bad Guy”, “Chop Suey… yes I do mean System Of A Down in a family film” and too many more to mention. However, they strangely work.

My only criticism would be that whilst the formula isn’t broken it also doesn’t feel like enough of new plot is added. It's nice having the familiar characters back but it doesn’t feel like a deserving sequel considering the time frame it has taken.

To summarise, If you’re looking for a film that’s earnest and with another optimistic and entertaining story for your whole family to enjoy then go see this, there’s a lot to enjoy. However if you looking for a family film on the level of Walt Disney's Encanto to satiate your need for animated entertainment then maybe temper your expectations slightly.

All In all I give it 3.5 stars out of 5, a Valiant, entertaining family romp that’s worth a watch by all.
