Sinners is the latest offering from Director, Producer and Writer Ryan Coogler starring Michael B. Jordan in the dual roll of twin brothers; Smoke and Stack.

Set in the 1930’s, during the prohibition era, the film begins with the twins returning to their hometown from Chicago after being mixed up with the mobs there and having worked for the imfamous Al Capone.

Arriving back with some illicitly acquired alcohol and a large amount of money, they plan to buy a disused sawmill and turn it into a Juke Joint.

After buying the sawmill from the racist owner, they begin to reconnect with the local townsfolk to launch and promote the Juke Joint. One of the first people they recruite is their cousin Sammie (played by Miles Caton in his first acting role).

Sammie is the son of the local Preacher, who is very gifted musician, who in keeping with the mythology of the film supposes that when he plays his music, he has the power to conjure spirits from the past, present, future and evil.

The brothers begin reestablishing connections in town as well as recruiting some of the townsfolk the work with them in the Juke Joint.

Smoke, one of the twin brothers goes to see his estranged wife Annie (played by Wunmi Mosaku) to see is she will help with Juke Joint. Annie a practitioner of Hoodoo with an understanding of the supernatural is reluctant at first but with trepidation agrees to help.

The film is a slow burn, but that works in its favour; establishing the characters with the undertones of 1930’s America that is until the pace picks up when the juke joint patrons and the twin brothers encounter the vampires.

Michael B. Jordan does a great job of playing twin brothers giving a nuanced performance to create two believable characters. However the stand out performance has to be from the newcomer Miles Caton who delivers a great performance amongst seasoned veterans, while Hailee Steinfeld is great in a role that is unlike anything she has done before.

With minor elements of the film being inspired by From Dusk Till Dawn and previous vampire films, Sinners still takes the vampire genre refreshing on it’s own path. Ryan Coogler does a great job coming up with an original story.

I have no hesitation in saying Sinners is certainly the best film so far this year and the best vampire film in years and it certainly earns itself a worthy 4.5 stars and very much deserves to be a success. Perhaps it’ll be a cult classic in the making?
